The house-lot was entered in his name, as to a first purchaser. It lay upon the pent highway by the Yantie, between the Town Green and the allotment of Thomas Bliss" [from "History of Norwich, Connecticut by Frances Manwaring Caulkins"]
Notes 1) The term "pent highway" is assumed here to refer to a gated (or barred) road Source: pg 99, Google books "History of Norwich, Connecticut: From Its Possession by the Indians to the " By Frances Manwaring Caulkins >searched for "what is the pent highway Yantie Connecticut"
2) The spelling of "Yantie" is clearly a mis-record as the Yantic is a river flowing through Norwich
Stephen Backus's father, William Backus Sr, was a founding father of Norwich. He died shortly after arriving in Norwich and willed his 6-acre lot to his son Stephen who apparently built on it circa 1675. The recorded history of the house begins when Stephen Backus, Jr., sold the home lot to Ensign Leffingwell, who in 1701 was grated liberty "to keep a publique house of entertainment for strangers." (pp3-4) "Architecturally the Inn has many features to delight the antiquarian and the lover of colonial architecture and interior finish at its best. The Inn was originally built around the frame of the earlier house erected by Stephen Backus in the 17th century " (p8)
