Name | Cunedda Gwledig ap Edeyrn, {Romans}, was also known as Cunedda Wledig, the Imperator.
Note | Cunedda Wledig, King of North Wales was a British prince and the first ruler of the Welsh people of whom there is any authentic record, a powerful warrior Prince who came from the north of Britain Born c. AD 380 Died c. AD 470, possibly earlier He was a Roman officer, leader of the Votadini, on the northern-most wall of Britain, Hadrian's Wall, and was involved around 430 in the wars against the Picts who were threatening the lands south of the wall. He came to assist his Brythonic brethren (people of Britain), and with his success in conquering their enemies, he attained the title of "Wledig," or Great King The King and his men (with his family, 11 of his 12 sons) are moved south in 450 from Hadrian's Wall to the north of Wales by Magnus Maximus (known as Macsen Wledig) to protect Wales from the invasions of the Irish as the Roman Legions had withdrawn to expel the invaders of Ireland who had settled into the area. He then settled in Venedotia, North Wales, after the battles in what later became the kingdom of Gwynedd and he succeeded in holding the Irish incursions at bay Sources historyfiles.co.uk/KingListsBritain/GaelsPictland.htm http://www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/bios/cunedwgd.html.
Historical fact | before 386 | He See note for details; in County of Flintshire, Wales (MiddleAges part of Anglo-Saxon Britain), EuropeG, before 386. Background / References ================ The name Cunedda is better known today as Kenneth or Kennoth, and derives from Celtic "Counodagos", meaning 'good lord'. Cunedda is one of the Founding fathers of the Welsh Royal Dynasties His son Gwen was the grandfather of King Arthur According to the 'Saxon Genealogies' found in some manuscripts of 'Nennius' and held by a number of scholars to be of the 7th century, 'Cunedag,' ancestor of Maelgwn Gwynedd, came with his eight sons from the north, i.e. Manaw Gododdin, 146 years before Maelgwn reigned, and drove the Scots (i.e. the Irish) with very great slaughter from Gwynedd, so that they never returned Tenth century pedigrees provide the links with Maelgwn, furnish the names of nine sons of Cunedda, and describe him as the son of Edern ap Padarn Beisrudd ap Tegid Though far from contemporary, these accounts seem to tell a true story. The Old Welsh form 'Cunedat' goes back to a Celtic 'Counodogos,' signifying 'good lord,' while Eternus, Paternus, and Tacitus point to a Roman environment of several generations. 'Peisrudd' (scarlet cloak) may, perhaps, be taken as evidence of the holding of some high office in the empire As to the sons it is noteworthy that the names of most of them are preserved in the nomenclature of Welsh tribal units within the limits traditionally assigned to their conquests, viz. the rivers Dee and Teify. Rhufon (Romanus) is represented by Rhufoniog, Dunod (Donatus) by Dunoding, Ceredig by Ceredigion, Afloeg by Aflogion in Lleyn, Dogfael by Dogfeiling in Drffryn Clwyd, and Edern by Edeirnion. The Osweilion of Osfael has not yet been located; Tybion, the eldest son, is said to have died in Manaw Gododdin, but his son Meirion (Marianus) comes into the picture as the lord of Meirionydd. Einion Yrth completes the number; it was his son Cadwallon Lawhir (of the long hand), who, according to tradition, rounded off the work of the family by the final defeat of the Irish of Anglesey All this may be reasonably accepted as showing how, about the time that the Roman authority came to an end in Britain, a Brythonic Christian chief from the banks of the Forth drove the Goidels from north-west Wales and laid the foundation of Gwynedd of the Middle Ages. It has been suggested that Cunedda and his troops came south in pursuance of a deliberate plan devised by Stilicho, when, a little before 400, he was concerned in the defense of Britain. This would fit in fairly with the 146 years of the 'Saxon Genealogies'; on the other hand, the position of Cunedda in the pedigrees points to a later date in the 5th cent. Four of the sons, viz. Donatus, Eternus, Marianus, and Romanus, bear names which were current in Christian circles of this time; the title Gwledig (ruler) indicates a prince of special (perhaps Roman) authority. The name is an unusual one, though found in the place-name Alt-Cunedda near Kidwelly; it was bestowed, perhaps as an antiquarian revival, upon a son of Cadwallon ap Gruffudd ap Cynan. The poem in the 'Book of Taliesin' known as 'Marwnad Cunedda' had some interesting details, but the false form 'Cuneddaf' betrays its late origin and it cannot be used with any confidence. [Dictionary of Welsh Biography p87-88] "That man is Cunedda the First, or Cunedda the Great, for great he must have been." The oldest piece of literature we have is the poem in which his bard bewails his death, singing of his might and this conquest of Bernicia, when he captured the great Southern Wall, and so made himself King of Upper Britain It is likely that he was a Pict but it must be remembered that up there, between the Walls, a Pict might be either an Ivernian, or a Goidel, or a Brython, so far as race went. It only meant that he belonged to the free tribes from beyond the Northern Wall, some of which still practiced tattooing. The old province between the Walls had become alive with little states, homes of raiders and killers. The Picts of Galloway had marked themselves off from the rest = = = His origin, his career, and his name link the Roman past with the medieval future. He was a grandson of Paternus who had been appointed, probably by Valentinian, to rule the Votandini of the north-east coast, between Tyne and Forth…he is one of the first persons in authority in Britain who were known only by a personal name. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather had all borne normal Roman names, and are given an origin among the cultured Romans of the south." He conquered Wales, migrating from his base in northern England where the Roman forces under Vortigern, based in York, moved in to fill the void "The Age of Arthur," John Morris (Scribner's, 1973, p.66) A Roman officer by birth, he is called "The Great". = = = He established the Royal Dynasty of Gwynedd and consolidated the Kingdom of Wales. Over the next several centuries the Scots married into the remaining Irish and local Welsh population and established most of the Welsh dynasties The present day area of Wales called Cardigan is named for Cunedda Wledig He founded a dynasty which, through his descendants, ruled the Welsh people during several centuries. He seems to have been a Christian and probably he was partly of Roman ancestry THE WELSH PEOPLE, by John Rhys and David Brynmor-Jones In Annales Cambriae MS., CUNEDDA is the nineteenth generation from BELI MAWR who was the son of ANNA. Rhys quotes from Jesus College MS.20., as follows: "This Anna, was daughter to the Emperor of Rome. That Anna who used to be said by the men of Egypt to be cousin to the Virgin Mary." If we may follow Nennius' Historia Britorum, BELI MAWR, son of Mynogan, to whom all of the genealogies trace, was the leader of the Brythons against Julius Caesar at the time of the Roman invasion, 55 BC CUNEDDA married a daughter of Coel Hen, the 15th generation from the beginning of pedigree No. 10 in the Annales Cambriae which extends back to the same BELI MAWR and ANNA through another son Regarding these ancient pedigrees, Rhys writes as follows: "It fortunately happens that there are several pedigrees appended to the earliest manuscripts of the Annales' Cambrae and as they are undoubtedly old and came into being at a time when every one's genealogy was most religiously preserved and remembered as a kind of title-deed to his status---in the then existing legal and social system---we may with a high degree of confidence look upon them as in substance accurate." = = = Much had been written about this Cunedda who came to Gwynedd in North West Wales from among the men of the North - the inhabitants of Southern Scotland Cunedda, the Atavus of Maelgwn Gwynedd came with at least 8 sons and maybe up to 12, and one grandson from Manaw Gododdin and drove the Irish out of Gwynedd The only place where Cunedda's own name is found is in Allt Cunedda near Cydweli, considered among the founding fathers of the Welsh Nation Cunedda's family had been important in Scotland for generations. His father's name was Edern (aka Aeternus ap Padeyrn). His grandfather was Padarn Peisrudd (aka Paternus Pasrut of the Red Robe), and his great-grandfather, Tegid. Cunedda gave his sons Latin names Called Gwledig, or Over-King, the perpetuator of the command and authority of the Dux Britanni arum. He was the first native ruler of the Cymry after the retirement of the Romans in 410. His power extended from Carlisle to Wearmouth, his court being held at the former place. His retinue consisted of 900 horses, and he wore the golden belt and other insignia of the office of Over-King He was a fervent Catholic and converted his subjects to Christianity; his descendants were, many of them, ecclesiastics, who organized the Church in his Kingdom Cunedda Wledig (or Cunedag) hailed from Manau Gododdin, a sub-division of the greater Kingdom of Gododdin (Lothian) in modern Scotland. His capital may have been in the Clackmannan region. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather bore Roman names and were probably confederate allies of the Roman Administration living just north of Hadrian's Wall. The appendage to Paternus' name is particularly telling. Like many prominent men of his ear, Cunedda claimed descent from Beli Mawr, the Celtic Sun-God, through his son, Lludd Law Ereint, God of Healing and grandson, Afallach, God of the Underworld Source Matthew Genealogical Research Foundation at www.users.qwest.net/~butchmatt2 |
