Name | | William Beauclerc, I; Don's 27th GGF, was also known as William the Conqueror, at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.2 |
Name | | He was also known as William the Bastard. |
Note | | William the Conqueror is perhaps the most famous ancestor of this family tree; some information is captured here from DJ's research
William's successful assault on King Harold in 1066 changed the concept of England from the "MiddleAges" to the "Medieval England"
He was described to have been "burly, with a harsh guttural voice, at about 5' 10", with excessive corpulence in middle years, exceptional physical strength, and in good health. He had Russet hair, long arms and legs" [ from a FamilySearch note ]
-and-
is said to have been "of medium height, corpulent, but majestic in person, choleric, mendacious, greedy, a great soldier, governor, centralizer, legislator, and innovator" [ from Encyclopedia of World History, page 191 ] ======================================= [ from FamilySearch note ] William the Conqueror was invited to the castle of Count Baldwin V, King of Flanders in about 1045 and saw Matilda at court, falling in love with her. She was already infatuated with a young blond headed knight from England, who also was invited to her father's castle for the same occasion
William tried his best for four years to win her affection and became tired of waiting. One day he waited on his horse for her to come out of the church, and when she did, he got off his horse, walked up to her, jerked her cape (cloak) off of her, which threw her to the ground, he then took his foot and rolled her in the dust, and claimed to her that she would be his wife. They were married in 1053
Matilda died four years before William; he was so grieved by this that when he went to war after her death, his heart was not it the war, and he was killed. When they tried to put him in the coffin, he was so large, that he exploded ======================================= For hundreds of years before 1066, England had been ruled by Anglo-Saxon kings
When Edward "the Confessor" died in 1066, William of Normandy saw his chance for a successful invasion of England and he built a fleet, attracted many knights, and obtained the pope's blessing. He then gained victory at the Battle of Hastings and was crowned King of England on Christmas of 1066
His illegitimate son, William, had succeeded his father as duke of Normandy in 1035 at the age of eight. The lack of heirs to the English throne and Edward the Confessor's predilection for Norman's made it possible for William to put forward his candidature, though he was only Edward's cousin by marriage
During the next few years, William presided over a gradual redistribution of land in England, aided by the establishment of feudalism under which his followers were granted land in return for pledges of service and loyalty. He was noted for his efficient if harsh rule; his administration relied upon Norman and other foreign personnel, especially Lanfranc Archbishop of Canterbury
In 1085 started the Domesday Book
Saxon Rebellions led to the confiscation of lands, which the Norman Barons received. As a result of this Norman invasion, the English people today are of both Norman and Anglo-Saxon extraction
[…] England to his next son William-William II, or William Rufus-and 5,000 pounds of silver to his youngest son Henry I
Henry used his share to buy land in Normandy and play his brothers off against each other. He was present in the New Forest when William was killed, and he immediately galloped to Winchester to secure the royal treasury for himself. He won baronial support with a charter of liberties and was crowned king on 5 Aug 1100. In 1101, Henry's brother Robert led an invasion to overthrow him, but Henry had won the support of both the English and the church and eventually bought off Robert with a pension
In that year he also defeated and captured Robert at the Battle of Tinchebray, thus becoming Duke of Normandy as well as king of England His marriage in 1100 to Edith, daughter of Malcolm III of Scotland, united him to the English royal line, but after William, his only legitimate son, was drowned in 1120, Henry was unable to secure the succession for his daughter, Matilda
When William the Conqueror died, he left Normandy to his eldest son Robert
[He died at Hermentruvilleby; was buried at Abbey of St. Stephen; from Plantagenet Royalty LDS book on Royalty; there are many books on William the Conqueror]. |
