Note		Henry was the youngest son of William the Conqueror and Matilda, born at Selby in Yorkshire in September of 1068 and held the title of Duke of Normandy at his birth On August 2, 1100 he became the King of England ("Koning van Engeland" in Dutch); he was crowned shortly after the suspicious death of his brother, William (on page 45); he was then christened on August 5, 1100 in Selby, West Riding of Yorkshire, Medieval England Henry gained his nickname, "Beauclerc" because of his education—Beauclerc means "great scholar". He was also known as Hendrik I, Henry Sinclair "The Lion" and as a Plantagenêt—he could have been an early Plantagenêt before his death as this was established in about 1130 but I chose to not use this… this is from Fulk's son Geoffroy (b 24-Aug-1113) who took this nickname from his use of sprigs of "yellow broom blossom" that he wore in his hat; the name is from "genêt" (the French name for "planta genista"), Latin for the broom shrub ------------------------------------------------------------- Jealousies & dissensions broke out between Henry and his elder brothers quite early: on the sudden mysterious death of his brother King William in the New Forest in 1100 (who was hunting with him), he immediately seized the crown and the public treasures, his other brother Robert being not yet returned from the crusade To strengthen his hold on the affections of his subjects, he granted a charter re-establishing the laws of the Confessor, abolished the curfew, professed a reform in his own charter and manners and married Princess Maud, daughter of Malcolm, King of Scotland and niece of Edgar Atheling, thus uniting the Norman and Saxon races When his brother Robert invaded England in 1101, war was prevented by negotiation and the grant to Robert of a pension of 3,000 marks Henry spent several years shifting loyalties from one brother to the other which led to the brothers signing a mutual accession treaty to keep Henry from ever holding the crown; he was granted 5,000 pounds of silver when his brother William died ------------------------------------------------------------As Don's 27 paternal GGF, 4 of his 6 wives also have family links (3 are shown as in another branch) Henry married Eadgyth (who later changed her name to Matilda) and had two sons and a daughter.
