Note | | The American Genealogist, page 242, "Backus Correction" b by Donald L. Jacobus, M. A. of New Haven, Conn
The order for the distribution of the estate of John Charles of Branford, Conn., in Nov. 1673, refers to William Backhus' children by John Charles's daughter Sarah deceased (New Haven County Court Records, Vol. 1, p. 72)
Sarah Charles, daughter of John, was born Oct. 1637 and baptized Oct. 1640, according to records of the First Church New Haven (New Haven Genealogical Magazine, Vol. 2, p. 391). In a number of printed sources, she is attributed as wife to the first William Backus (before his marriage to the widow Anne Bingham), and she is thus made mother of the William Backus who married Elizabeth Pratt. This error has gained wide currency because it appeared in Caulkin's History of Norwich (1866)
It must be noted, however, that Sarah Charles was only four years older than Elizabeth Pratt, so she could hardly have been mother of Elizbeth's husband. Furthermore, the record of John Charles' estate cited above refers in 1673 to the children (evidently minor children) which William Backus (then living) had by his deceased wife Sarah Charles. The first William Backus died in 1664, nine years before this record, so the reference could hardly apply to him. The second William was then an adult with a number of children, and he is the only one to whom the record could apply
The fact is, the second William Backus married first, Sarah Charles, and she was the mother of his first three children, William, 1660, John 1661, and Sarah 1663. The other children were by his second wife, Elizabeth Pratt. This solution harmonizes all the facts stated above, and is positively proved by the will of Willilam Backus himself (New London Probate Records, File No. 228 (original will), recorded Book B, p. 404)
The will of William Backus of Norwich, dated 8 Feb. 1693/4 proved 17 Apr. 1721: wife Elizabeth; sons Joseph and Nathaniell; son John and grandson William; daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, Hannah, and Mary; son William had by deed of gift. With regard to his sons William and John and daughter Sarah, he wrote; "what I have given them formerly with that which I doe give them in this my will shall be the whole of their portions of my estate, anything that I Received of their Grandfather Charles his estate notwithstanding"
The identity of the first wife of the first William Backus is unknown. |
Baptism | October 1637 | Sarah Elizabeth Charles was baptized in October 1637 in Colonial County of New Haven, Colony of Connecticut, British Colonial America (North America)G+. Also shown as Oct 16407,8 |

Name | | Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes, of Teck, was also known as Mary, Her Every-Day Name. |
Note | | Mary of Teck (Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes; 26 May 1867-24 March 1953) was the queen consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Empress of India, as the wife of King-Emperor George V
By birth, she was a princess of Teck, in the Kingdom of Württemberg, with the style Serene Highness; to her family, she was informally known as May, after her birth month
Her father, who was of German extraction, married into the British Royal Family, and "May" was born and brought up in the United Kingdom
At the age of 22 she was betrothed to Lord Grosvenor Hood, 5th Viscount Hood. This betrothal was ended as she conceived in late 1889. Her first son William was born in Cardiff, Wales, on July 22, 1890
At the age of 24 she was betrothed to Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, the heir to the British throne, but six weeks after the announcement of the engagement he unexpectedly died of pneumonia
The following year she became engaged to the new heir, Albert Victor's brother, George. Before her husband's accession, she was successively Duchess of York, Duchess of Cornwall and Princess of Wales. As his queen consort from 1910, she supported her husband through World War I, his ill-health, and major political changes arising from the aftermath of the war and the rise of socialism and nationalism
After George's death in 1936, her eldest son Edward became King-Emperor, but to her dismay he abdicated the same year in order to marry twice-divorced American socialite Mrs. Wallis Simpson
She supported her second son, Albert, who succeeded to the throne as George VI, until his death in 1952
She died the following year, at the beginning of the reign of her granddaughter, Elizabeth II.; briefly, there were three queens in the country: Mary; her daughter-in-law, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother; and Elizabeth II
Queen Mary was known for setting the tone of the British Royal Family, as a model of regal formality and propriety, especially during state occasions. Noted for superbly bejeweling herself for formal events, she left a collection of jewels that are now considered priceless. |
