Eadwig Ætheling
M, #1708, Deceased, b. about 991, d. 1017
Parents
Biography
Birth | about 991 | Eadwig Ætheling was born about 991 in Wessex Kingdom, England (MiddleAges part of Anglo-Saxon Britain), EuropeG+. |
Death | 1017 | He died in 1017 at age ~26 in England (MiddleAges part of Anglo-Saxon Britain), EuropeG+. The cause of his death (at the age of 26) in the year of 1017 was that he was murdered by King Cnut
When Sweyn the Forkbeard conquered the Middle-ages of England in 1013, Æthelred (Eadwig's father) fled to Normandy-Eadwig, who had previously rarely been associated with his elder brothers, Æthelstan and Edmund, remained behind with them in England
When Sweyn died in February 1014, Æthelred was restored to the throne amd Æthelstan then died in June 1014, leaving Edmund and Sweyn's son Cnut to dispute the throne
In October 1016 Cnut and Edmund agreed to divide England between them, but Edmund then died a month later, leaving Cnut as undisputed King
Eadwig, who was now the last surviving son by his father's first marriage was banished in 1016 and then outlawed in 1017 by Cnut; however he was reconciled with Cnut the same year and allowed to live in England, but was then executed (murdered) soon after at the instigation of King Cnut, possibly after attempting to rally resistance in the south west.
The Anglo-Saxon claim to the throne then passed to the elder son of Æthelred's second marriage, the future Edward the Confessor
Eadwig was buried at Tavistock Abbey. a place built by his uncle Ordwulf

Military | between 1675 and 1678 | He served in the military Ensign in Kings Philip's War between 1675 and 1678 in The Colony of Massachusetts Bay, British Colonial America (North America)G+. King Philip's War (sometimes called the First Indian War, Metacom's War, Metacomet's War, Pometacomet's Rebellion, or Metacom's Rebellion) was an armed conflict in 1675–1678 between indigenous inhabitants of New England and New England colonists and their indigenous allies. The war is named for Metacom, the Wampanoag chief who adopted the name Philip because of the friendly relations between his father Massasoit and the Mayflower Pilgrims. The war continued in the most northern reaches of New England until the signing of the Treaty of Casco Bay in April 1678
King Philip's War began the development of an independent American identity. The New England colonists faced their enemies without support from any European government or military, and this began to give them a group identity separate and distinct from Britain

Biography
Birth | about 987 | Ulfcytel Snillingr was born about 987 in Wessex Kingdom, England (MiddleAges part of Anglo-Saxon Britain), EuropeG+. |
Marriage | about 1004 | He and Wulfhilda Ætheling were married about 1004 in East Anglia, Norfolkshire, England (MiddleAges part of Anglo-Saxon Britain), EuropeG. |
Death | 18 October 1016 | He died on 18 October 1016 at age ~29 at Also known as Ashington (location continues to be under debate)G in Ashdon, County of Essex, England (MiddleAges part of Anglo-Saxon Britain), EuropeG. The cause of his death (at the age of 29) on Friday, October 18th, 1016 was that as the Earl of East Anglia and Ealdorman of East Anglia, he was killed during the Battle of Assandun in the Middle-ages of England, the final battle between King Edmund II and Knud of Denmark |
Name | | Ulfcytel Snillingr was also known as Ulfcytel Snillingr, Ealdorman of East Anglia.1 |
Name | | He was also known as Ulfkell. |
Name | | He was also known as Snillingr the Valliant. |
Name | | He was also known as Snilling Snlling. |
Note | | Ulfcytel was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman. He was apparently the ealdorman of East Anglia from 1004 to his death at the battle of Assandun, although he is not called an ealdorman in any of the charters he witnessed. Scandinavian sources refer to him as Ulfkell Snillingr, the byname meaning bold
His background --------- Leofsige, ealdorman of Essex, was exiled for killing a shire reeve in 1002. It is not certain that any ealdorman was then appointed by King Æthelred the Unready to replace Leofsige, although John of Worcester's chronicle does call Ulfcytel the "dux" (war leader) of the East Anglians, and he does appear as leader of the East Anglians on several occasions
It may be that Ulfcytel was married to a daughter of King Æthelred (by his first wife) named Wulfhild, as suggested by a supplementary text to the Jómsvíkinga saga
From 1004 onwards he witnessed a large number of King Æthelred's charters, being described in these as a minister, that is "thegn", rather than an ealdorman
Ulfcytel's name is of Scandinavian origin, but no details of his family are known. It is possible that he was in some way related to the family or affinity of Æthelstan Half-King which had dominated politics in East Anglia and Essex from the 930s to the 990s. In addition to the English sources, Ulfcytel also appears as a character in Saint Olaf's saga in the Heimskringla, and here East Anglia is called "Ulfcytel's land"
His Military career 1004-1016 ---------------- In 1004 the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reports a bloody battle between the East Anglians and an army led by Danish king Swein Forkbeard. The Chronicle states that Ulfcytel and the "councilors in East Anglia" attempted to buy a truce with Swein, but that the Danes broke the truce and marched to Thetford where a part of the East Anglian fyrd engaged them. The battle seems to have been a draw as the Danes managed to escape. Two of the Chronicle manuscripts state that the Danes later "admitted that they had never met with harder hand-play [fighting] in England than Ulfcytel gave them". The Danes suffered heavy losses, and were probably only saved from destruction because Ulfcytel's order to destroy their ships was not carried out. They left England without causing any further devastation which has been recorded
On his next appearance in the Chronicles, Ulfyctel is again portrayed as the leader of the East Anglian armies. On this occasion the Battle of Ringmere against the Danes near Ipswitch in 1010 turned into a rout, caused by the flight of Thurcytel "Mare's head", and only the men of Cambridgeshire stood to fight. The English dead included the King's brother-in-law, the son-in-law and grandson of ealdorman Byrhtnoth, "and countless people"
Ulfcytel's third and last appearance in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is at the battle of Assandun on 18 October 1016 where he fought for Edmund Ironside. Here he was killed; he is listed among "the chief men of the nation" by the Chronicle. According to one Scandinavian source he was killed by Thorkell the Tall, who married his widow. Thorkell may well have married one of Æthelred's widowed daughters although it is far from certain that he married Wulfhild
Alternatively, and less plausibly, Saint Olaf's Saga states that Ulfcytel was killed by Eiríkr Hákonarson near London

Norse sagas recorded a battle at Hringmaraheior ( Old English "Hringmere-huo" / Modern name "Ringmere Heath" ); the site was located in lands under the control of Ulfcytel Snillingr, then of East Anglia, at a site once thought to be near Wretham, but today thought to be at Rymer in Suffolk
The sack of Thetford had occurred in 1004. Sigvat records the victory of King Ethelred, allied with Saint Olaf over the Danes under Sweyn Forkbeard during the latter's campaigns in England and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle reports that during the sack of Thetford in 1004 Ulfcytel Snillingr and the "councilors in East Anglia" attempted to buy a truce with Swein, but that the Danes broke the truce and marched to Thetford where a part of the East Anglian fyrd engaged them. The Danes managed to escape. During the battle of Ringmere however it was the East Anglian fyrd who took flight, leaving the muster from Cambridgeshire to stand firm in their absence. However they were broken after a time leaving North-East Mercia exposed to the Danes
John of Worcester also records that the Danes defeated the Saxons. Over a three-month period the Danes wasted East Anglia, burning Thetford and Cambridge

He was also defeated in 2 battles against the Danes: on 18-May-1009 in East Anglia & on 05-May-1010 at Ringmere after their landing near Ipswich

Note | | James Heiskell was born in Rockdale, Texas, (Milam County), June 8, 1882. His father's name was Charlie and his mother's name was Texana; she was part American Indian, (tribe unknown)
Delia Curry was born on Valentine's Day in Marlin, Texas (Falls County), February 14, 1886. Her father's name was Louie and her mother's name was Lena
James met Delia in Fort Worth, Texas and they married in 1904 when she was eighteen years old and he was twenty two
Early in their marriage, they lived in Fort Worth but as their family grew in size, it became difficult to find enough work in Fort Worth to provide for their large family. Segregation was a barrier for Blacks who were looking for work during that time, even for domestic workers and sharecroppers
Jobs were available in the coal mines and cotton fields of several small Central Texas towns and James and Delia decided to move to the Irene/Pelham community where James worked as a sharecropper
By that time, he had several children who were old enough to work in the fields to pick cotton and they were expected to work several hours a day
Although James and Delia's children worked in the fields, they also attended school in the 'one room school' that was for Black children who lived in the Irene/Pelham community. His family fared well while living in Irene but eventually, the time came when their children married and moved away
During James and Delia's marriage, they had ten children but one son died during infancy. After several of their adult children settled in Fort Worth, they left the Irene/Pelham community and relocated to Fort Worth to be closer to family where they matured and enjoyed their retirement years
Delia was James's wife of forty seven years and she passed away, February 19, 1951
James later married Miss Eddie Skipper and he preceded her in death, October 8, 1962. |
