Biography
Birth | 22 January 1923 | John Barry Shave, Don's Dad R.I.P., was born on 22 January 1923 at 3 Southview RdG in Weymouth, County of Dorset, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG.1,2 |
Marriage | 12 January 1942 | He and Eileen Patricia Nicholls, Don's brother Mick's Mum & Don's stepmother, were married on 12 January 1942 in Long Ditton, County of Surrey, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG. Their marriage was at the Parish Church in Long Ditton (possbily with some of their families in attendance but NFIA) just 9-days short of Dad's 19th birthday, raising an as-yet-unanswered question: why?
Don's best guess is that they were married for her (clearly inadvertent) pregnancy with Michael John, who was born a few weeks later…
Mick's birth could have been a year later; a source (England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index, 1916-2005) has his parents marriage date in Apr-1942; research to continue3,4,5 |
Divorce | about 1945 | He and Eileen Patricia Nicholls, Don's brother Mick's Mum & Don's stepmother, were divorced about 1945 at Kingston Upon ThamesG in Region of Greater London, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG+. |
Marriage | 29 September 1950 | He and Lilian Maud Evans, Don's Mum R.I.P., were married on 29 September 1950 at Registry OfficeG in Bournemouth, County of Dorset, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG+.6,7 |
Death | 17 July 2008 | He died on 17 July 2008 at age 85 at Bournemouth HospitalG in Bournemouth, County of Dorset, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG+. The cause of his death (at the age of 85) on Thursday, July 17th, 2008 was from Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
Don's Dad had died when he was in hospital for something else8 |
Burial | August 2008 | He was buried in August 2008 at Buried in the St. John The Baptist Churchyard on Vicarage RoadG in Bournemouth, County of Dorset, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG+. 2 Images of the church are attatched |
Residence | ABT 1934–1939 | John Barry Shave, Don's Dad R.I.P., lived at Borstal prison in Middlesex CountyG in Region of Greater London, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG+, ABT 1934–1939. Don’s Dad was sent off by Don's Grandad (his father) at the age of 11 to the equivalent of a borstal prison ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borstal#Corporal_punishment ) for reasons that can only be imagined…
He was held there from 1934 to 1939, escaping often |
Historical fact | BET ABT SEP 1955 AND ABT 1989 | He; at 70 Elmes RoadG+ in Bournemouth, County of Dorset, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG+, BET ABT SEP 1955 AND ABT 1989. After his birth, Jamie's Granddad (his Dad's Dad) had decided in the autumn of 1955 that Jamie's Mum & Dad's flat at 10 Carlton Rd in Boscombe wasn’t the best idea for raising a child…
He purchased a house for Jamie's family: a 1920’s detached brick house at 70 Elmes Road in Moordown, Bournemouth; view some history here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moordown#20th-century_development
While there's no clue as to the actual cost of the purchase (a few thousand pounds), it would have been far more than Don's Dad had in the bank, if he even had had an account; there was a mortgage, but the deeds were not in Dad's name at all: Don's Granddad held them
This was not known to Don at all until his Gran died in the late 90's, when the house deed was still being held by his Uncle Doug, the Shave family business manager; Don & his brother Alan managed to reclaim it for their Dad around 2005
Best guess as to why? Don’s Grandad couldn’t trust his son to not sell the house as it had been “forced on him” and that it “wasn’t his”… -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contemplating the possibilities as to why this had happened, Don’s beliefs lean towards the strong probability that his Dad ( who was at that time aged 33 & was a very tall man at 6’8; view a snapshot of his profile here: https://donshave.website/Tree/DJ_Tree/individual.html#605 ) must have not been able to purchase a house at that time, hence his Dad's decision… he would have hated this but clearly accepted it, even though he and his father were never on the best of terms: see his Residence note at his age of 11?
There’s little doubt about Don’s recollection of his Dad’s inability to retain employment in those days, preventing him from getting a mortgage to purchase a house. Both his history & Don’s current knowledge of him show that his hatred of being “told what to do” and his unreliable temper & anger would be the cause: he’d use his fists to smash his boss in the face & then quit… can actively recall him changing jobs several times in the 50’s, 60’s and 70's
He ended up working until his retirement for a local national Bakery as a vehicle maintenance mechanic, traveling up and down the country at any hour |
Name | | He was also known as Tiny (because he wasn't… he was 6'8" & had size 13 shoes!), His Every-Day Name. |
Name | | He was also known as Johnny, (As His Wife Called Him.) |
Name | | He was also known as John Barrie. |
Note | | Don's Dad had zero religious beliefs… his 1st marriage, though, was in a Parish Church (see his Marriage note with Eileen) yet his 2nd marriage (with Don's Mum) was held at the Register Office in the Town Hall at Bournemouth
He never shared any advice for religion with Don. |
Military | about 1939 | He served in the military about 1939 in England (United Kingdom), EuropeG. Don's Dad served during WWII as a paratrooper; heard from him that he "never jumped as he was too big" |
Historical fact | 1951 | He; at BeachesG in Bournemouth, County of Dorset, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG+, in 1951. Snapshot caught of Don's Mum & Dad on the beach; date is best guess |
Occupation | between 1953 and 1958 | Between 1953 and 1958 John Barry Shave, Don's Dad R.I.P., was a Merchant Navy ship's cook in A conceptual continent surrounding the Region of OceaniaG. Don's Dad traveled to New York, Tahiti and other places around the world |
Occupation | July 1955 | In July 1955 John Barry Shave, Don's Dad R.I.P., was a Fitter (Garage) / shown on DJS's birth certificate in Bournemouth, County of Dorset, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG+. |
Historical fact | about 1967 | He; at 70 Elmes RoadG+ in Bournemouth, County of Dorset, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG+, about 1967. While the timing of this fact is not precise, Jame learned from his Dad that he knew of and had often used Cockney slang… he would tell about how he would "take a ball of chalk over to under the apples & pears for a hit and miss" which translates to peeing under the nearby stairs that he'd walk to!
Many other phrases exist: https://www.ruf.rice.edu/~kemmer/Words04/usage/slang_cockney.html |
Residence | before 17 July 2008 | He lived at 70 Elmes RoadG+ in Bournemouth, County of Dorset, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG+, before 17 July 2008. Don's Dad lived here until his death in July of 2008 |

Grestain (or Grestein) Abbey (in French: "Abbaye Notre-Dame de Grestain") is an 11th-Century Benedictine monastery near the town of Fatouville-Grestain, which is located in the modern-day Eure département of Upper Normandy, France
The abbey was in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lisieux
Closely associated with the family of William, Duke of Normandy, the abbey was instrumental in the Norman's taking control over the Catholic Church in England in the centuries following the Norman Conquest of England, establishing new churches and priories in England, and Abbots of Grestain ordained many English priests
Many churches mentioned in the Domesday Book cite Grestain as the founding establishment |
