Elisabeth, of Vendôme

Parents
Family
Daughter* | Adele (b. about 995, d. between 26 February 1033 and 1035) |
Biography
Birth | 960 | Elisabeth, of Vendôme, was born in 960 at VendômeG in Loir-et-Cher, Centre, France (Medieval), EuropeG. |
Marriage | before 989 | Fulk d'Anjou, III (Foulques in French), and she were married before 989 in France (Medieval), EuropeG+. Elizabeth married Fulk III (known as 'the Black') c. 990 and with him had one daughter, Adele, the future Comtesse de Vendôme; she was burned alive by her husband at the stake wearing her wedding dress after he discovered her in adultery with a farmer in December 999
Fulk III had a violent temperament (but was also pious), and was partial to acts of extreme cruelty as well as penitence; burning his wife was his most notorious act. On the other hand, he made four pilgrimages to the Holy Land in 1002, 1008, and 1038 and, in 1007, built the great abbey at Beaulieu-lès-Loches
As a result, historiography has this to say about him: "Fulk of Anjou, plunderer, murderer, robber, and swearer of false oaths, a truly terrifying character of fiendish cruelty, founded not one but two large abbeys. This Fulk was filled with unbridled passion, a temper directed to extremes. Whenever he had the slightest difference with a neighbor he rushed upon his lands, ravaging, pillaging, raping, and killing; nothing could stop him, least of all the commandments of God"
Alternate reports state that she was executed for adultery and witchcraft by being boiled alive, or that she died from a fire in Angers, which happened within days of her reported death

Death | 999 | She died in 999 at age ~39 at AngersG in Département de Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France (Medieval), EuropeG. She was reportedly burned to death in Medieval France by her husband, Fulk III for her adultery; alternate reports have her killed by boiling (for witchcraft) or that she just died in a fire / NFIA |
Note | | Elisabeth (Elizabeth) de Vendôme is of French Aristocracy and was the Heiress de Vendôme, born to Bouchard de Vendôme, Comte de Vendôme and Elizabeth de Corbiel; she was the 1st wife of Fulk III. |
