Sacrifice of King Domalde [in Ancient People & Artifacts]
Biography
| Birth | about January 339 | Domaldi VisbursSon, Don's 54th GGF, was born about January 339 in Uppsala, Uppsala Län, Sweden, EuropeG.1 |
| Death | 431 | He died in 431 at age ~92 in Uppsala, Uppsala Län, Sweden, EuropeG. King Domalde (a pagan in ancient Sweden) was sacrificed by his chieftains (at the old-age of 92) to end a severe famine and bring good harvests, marking the end of three years of offerings at Uppsala, first of oxen, then of men, before turning to their king. His blood was sprinkled on the gods' statues, and after his death, the land prospered, with his son's reign being particularly fortunate, according to the Ynglinga Saga and Historia Norwegiæ
The Context of the Sacrifice * Famine and Distress: King Domalde's rule coincided with a period of great famine and hardship in Sweden * Failed Offerings: The people first sacrificed oxen to the gods at Uppsala, but it did not improve the harvest * Human Sacrifice: In the following year, they offered men, but the crops were still poor
The King's Sacrifice * The Third Year: In the third year of the crisis, the chieftains of Sweden consulted and decided that King Domalde was to blame for the ongoing problems * The Ritual: They took the king and sacrificed him at Uppsala, sprinkling the statues of the gods with his blood * Atonement and Prosperity: The sacrifice was an expiation ritual meant to appease the gods and restore good harvests to the land
The Aftermath * Good Harvests: Following the sacrifice, the harvests improved, and the land enjoyed good seasons * Succession: Domalde was succeeded by his son, Domar, whose reign was marked by prosperity |
