Died as the King of Wessex, a Bretenanwealda (Britain-ruler) only the 8th to be given the title2 |
Burial | 23 November 838 | He was buried on 23 November 838 at Buried in an unknown cemeteryG in Winchester, Hampshire, England (MiddleAges part of Anglo-Saxon Britain), EuropeG. |
Name | | Ecgberht, Don's 36th GGF, was also known as Egbert the First Saxon King of Wessex, III. |
Name | | He was also known as Egbert the Great. |
Name | | He was also known as Egbert, Ecgbert or Ecgbriht. |
Name | | He was also known as Egbertus. |
Name | | He was also known as Egbert le Grand (the Great.) |
Note | | Historians today do not agree on Ecgberht's ancestry… the earliest version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the Parker Chronicle, begins with a genealogical preface tracing the ancestry of Ecgberht's son Æthelwulf back through Ecgberht, Ealhmund (thought to be Ealhmund of Kent), and the otherwise unknown Eoppa and Eafa to Ingild, brother of King Ine of Wessex, who abdicated the throne in 726. It continues back to Cerdic, founder of the House of Wessex
Ecgberht's descent from Ingild was accepted by Frank Stenton, but not the earlier genealogy back to Cerdic
Heather Edwards in her Online Dictionary of National Biography article on Ecgberht argues that he was of Kentish origin, and that the West Saxon descent may have been manufactured during his reign to give him legitimacy, whereas Rory Nazareth considered a Kentish origin unlikely, and that it is more probable that "Ecgberht was born of good West Saxon royal stock"
Ecgberht's wife's name is unknown. A fifteenth-century chronicle now held by Oxford University does name Ecgberht's wife as Redburga who was supposedly a relative of Charlemagne who he married when he was banished to Francia, but this is dismissed by academic historians in view of its late date. He is reputed to have had a half-sister Alburga, later to be recognised as a saint for her founding of Wilton Abbey
She was married to Wulfstan, ealdorman of Wiltshire, and on his death in 802 she became a nun, Abbess of Wilton Abbey =================== Egbert, a descendant of Cerdic (the founder of the Kingdom of Wessex) was born in about 775 and became known as the first King of All England
He was forced into a period of exile in 789 by his cousin Brethric under the powerful Offa, king of Mercia… after a short stay at the court of Offa, he took refuse in the court of Charlemagne, France where he stayed for about twelve years, serving as one of his captains
With the death of Brethrick (who was poisoned by his wife), Egbert returned to England in 802 and was crowned King of the West Saxons in Winchester
He married Lady Readberga (Redburga) in 806; they had 3 children
He appears to have reigned in peace until 809, when he began to make war on the tribes occupying the south-west quarter of England, and ten years later (in 819) he began the course of conquest which ended in making him, in 827, king of all England. He then received the ancient Honourable title of Bretwalda, which had long been disused
He went on to subdue West Wales (or Cornwall), to defeat the King of Mercia at the Battle of Ellandun in 825 (see Military note), and annexed Kent
In 829, the Northumbrians accepted his overlordship of all English kings and he was proclaimed "Bretwalda" or sole ruler of Britain (http://www.britannia.com/history/monarchs/mon1.html) giving the name of England to the whole realm; still in existence are some coins struck by Egbert, though these are now extremely rare
The sovereigns of Mercia, East Anglia, and Northumbria were, however, not dispossessed, but became tributary to Egbert. In the latter years of his reign, these Northmen made several descents upon England, and were finally defeated at the battle of Hingston Down in Cornwall in 835, when they fought and failed with a formidable army of Danes; see the Military fact
He died in November of 838 and was buried at Westminster; he was then succeeded by his son, Ethelwulf

He married Anne Reve of Gosfield on August 8, 1611. They were married in the church of Saint Mary in Bocking. Anne was a daughter of John Reve or Reeve and Mary Brock..Thomas not only was a merchant and cloth manufacturer, but by 1630 had fairly large holdings in lands around Bocking and Braintree
He died in early 1633. He wrote his will December 11, 1632 and it was proved in court on February 12, 1632/33. He probably died in late December or early January. Anne never remarried and went with three of her sons, Thomas, Samuel and Joseph to America in 1650.
