Note | Caroline Lisk's Ancestry by Eric Christensen Eric had seen several family trees showing that my 3rd great grandmother Caroline Lisk Fox was the daughter of Bradford Lisk and I wanted to do a careful follow-up, because it looked as if this could give me a connection to William Bradford of the Plymouth Colony This connection seemed to be validated by a quick search of my DNA matches on ancestry.com, where I immediately found five of my matches whose trees show a descent from William Bradford, and I will probably find more when I have time to search more So with that DNA validation, I present here what I believe to be the ancestry of Caroline Lisk =========================================================== Caroline Lisk (born August 21, 1808 in Adams, New York; died November 25, 1845, in Nauvoo, Illinois), was married to David Williams Fox (born August 10, 1805 in Adams, New York; died October 25, 1845 in Nauvoo, Illinois) Caroline Lisk was the daughter of Bradford Lisk (born 1765 in Lebanon, Connecticut; died December 11, 1848, in Adams, New York) and Jerusha Lewis[?] (born about 1781; died August 30, 1856). Histories of Jefferson County, New York, name Bradford Lisk as one of the earliest settlers in Jefferson County. The bridge across Sandy Creek, opposite his house, was known as Lisk's Bridge, which was where the early Mormon missionaries did their preaching in the area. Caroline Lisk and her husband, David Williams Fox, followed the Mormons to Nauvoo, Illinois, which is where they both died =========================================================== Bradford Lisk is said to be the son of William Lisk (born December 17, 1738, in Lebanon, Connecticut; died June 27, 1808, in Lebanon, Connecticut) and Lydia Hyde (born about 1744; died February 18, 1822 in Cooperstown, New York). Although some historians claim that William Lisk died unmarried, the majority of historians agree that he was married to Lydia Hyde and had at least two children with her. Lydia appears in the 1810 census in Ostego, New York, as "Widow Lisk," directly above her son, Daniel Lisk. Her obituary appeared on February 25, 1822, in "The Watchtower" in Cooperstown, New York: "Died, In this town, on Monday the 18th inst. after a long illness, Widow LYDIA LISK, formerly of Lebanon, Conn. aged 78" =========================================================== William Lisk was the son of Andrew Lisk (born about 1714; died February 20, 1797, in Lebanon, Connecticut) and Elizabeth Bradford (born October 21, 1712 in Lebanon, New York; died June 27, 1808 in Lebanon, New York). Military records show that Andrew Lisk served in the French and Indian War in 1758 and 1759. Most of their children died young. Their son William died on the same day that Elizabeth died =========================================================== Elizabeth Bradford was the daughter of Joseph Bradford (born April 18, 1675 in Plymouth, Massachusetts; died January 17, 1747, in Montville, Connecticut) and Anna Fitch (born April 6, 1675, in Norwich, Connecticut; died October 7, 1715, in Lebanon, Connecticut). Joseph was one of fifty-one original proprietors of Lebanon, Connecticut, and represented Lebanon in the Connecticut General Assembly from 1707 to 1714 =========================================================== Joseph Bradford [this person] was the son of William Bradford, Jr. (born June 17, 1624 in Plymouth, Massachusetts; died February 20, 1704 in Plymouth, Massachusetts) and Mary Fitch (born 1643; died about 1676). Major William Bradford, Jr., served in the King Phillip War, where he was severely wounded. Mary was his second wife, after his first wife, Alice Richards, died; and after Mary's death he married Mary Wood. Mary Fitch's background is hard to determine. She is referred to in some histories as the "widow Wiswell," but the Wiswell family of the time was small and all accounted for, and she doesn't seem to have been married to any of them. Some people have conjectured that she was actually named Sarah and was the widow of Francis Griswold (a name similar to Wiswell), but her history will probably always remain a mystery =========================================================== William Bradford, Jr., was the son of William Bradford (born 1590 in England; died May 9, 1657 in Plymouth, Massachusetts) and Alice Carpenter (born 1590 in England; died March 26, 1670, in Plymouth, Massachusetts). William Bradford was orphaned at a young age. He joined the Separatist Church as a teenager, was forced to flee to Holland to avoid persecution, and in 1620 came to America aboard the Mayflower. When he and some other men had gone ashore exploring and looking for a place to settle, his first wife, Dorothy May, fell off of the Mayflower and drowned in Cape Code Bay. His second wife, Alice Carpenter, was a widow with two sons whom she left in England when she came to America to marry William, and then she sent for her sons to join them to be raised in the Bradford household. William was elected the second governor of the Plymouth Colony and was re-elected for several terms thereafter. He is sometimes referred to as the Father of American History. | |
