Seeking a new life during the height of the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640), when Mary, their 2nd daughter to die, had died in Colchester, Essex on Thursday, November 1st, 1635, William and Tamesin decided to emigrate with their family from Yarmouth in Barnstable County, Tudor England to the then-developing town of Yarmouth on Cape Cod in the colonial County of Barnstable in the American colonial colonies Neither the name of the ship nor the actual travel date are known--the date used is presumed to have been after the death of Mary Their actual arrival in colonial America is not clear--a ship named Rose did depart from England arriving in Boston on April 8th, 1637 with passenger lists that do not show "William Lumpkin" yet it does list a "William Ludkin" aged 33, who was a locksmith, but lists a wife named "Elizabeth" and one child… view sources: https://www.packrat-pro.com/ships/johndorothy.htm or https://archive.org/details/plantersofcommon00bank/page/186/mode/2up Although the age is about right, the spouse's name and only one child indicates this was not the same person [1, 3, 4, 5, 6] When he actually emigrated is not clear, but the NEGHR says it was about 1637 [12] and that the went to Yarmouth in the Plymouth colony of colonial America; he died there before 29 Jan 1671 at about age 76 More recently, Robert Charles Anderson has summarized the information on "William Lumpkin" as follows: [13] Lumpkin, William: Unknown; 1638; Yarmouth; Plymouth Colony Records 1:108, 141, 7:9; Plymouth Colony Probate Record 3:1:30; Mayflower Descendant 12:139-41, 17:99-100; Bassett-Preston 181-82 [14] In support of the migration date, the following legal document recorded in Essex County, England and dated is 12 June 1637 [15] William Potter, senior (plaintiff) versus deforciants Joseph Wiseman, gent., and wife Elizabeth, John Beckwith, and wife Mary, William Lumpkin, and wife Thomasine, and Thomas Tenneth, and wife Dorothy over one messuage in Earls Colne N.B. A deforciant is a person who wrongfully withholds something from someone by force; a messuage is a dwelling house with outbuildings and land assigned to its use Potter was suing over the failure of these four women and their husbands to physically turn over property that they had either sold him or that he had purchased from their father. In other words, this is an important clue to the identity of Thomasine's father and mother, presently unknown. The listing of the married women is in birth order ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Following Anderson's criteria for arrival (which came in the year before the first date of record), the Lumkins arrived in 1638 because of the following record: On 7 January 1639, William was among those proposed "to take up their freedom at Yarmouth" [16] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Upon his arrival, William became a freeman in Yarmouth on Cape Cod shortly after, and was one of the original proprietors. He is reported to have been among the "proprietors" of the town (referred to by its Indian name of “Mattacheese”), in 1639.
