Son of Miles Hobart and Ellinor Blaverhassett, Thomas was born in Hordon-on-the-Hill, Essex, England and married Audrey Hare, and to this union a son, Henry Hobart, was born
Thomas was a gentleman "of good estate, great estimation, and zealous and religious in the true service of God"
Thomas was a Protestant, and when [this] was discovered by the informer, Bishop Bonner, he was seized and imprisoned. As a result of his refusal to recant his Protestantism, Thomas was one of the three hundred who were burned at the stake in Essex, England on May 26, 1555 during the reign of Queen Mary I ("Bloody Mary"). It is believed that the story of Thomas Highbed in Fox's Book of Martyrs, refers to him
Before being burned alive, Thomas last words were believed to have been "Forgive them Lord, they don't know what they do. Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!" |

Henry Hobart [in People]
Biography
Birth | 1 January 1574 | Henry Hobart was born on 1 January 1574 in Plumstead, Norfolk County, England (Tudor), EuropeG. |
Death | 29 December 1625 | He died on 29 December 1625 at age 51 at Blickling HallG+ in Blickling, Norfolk County, England (Tudor), EuropeG+. The cause of his death (at the age of 51) on Monday, December 29th, 1625 is not known-surviving in 1625 was difficult
Died as the Lord Chief Justice of the Common Plea's and as a Sir, the 1st Baronet of Blickling Hall |
Name | | Henry Hobart was also known as Hubbard. |
Note | | Sir Henry Hobart (or Hubbard), 1st Baronet, an English Judge and Politician who was born circa 1560 to Thomas Hobart and Audrey Hare. He was also the Great grandson of Sir James Hobart of Monks, Eleigh, Suffolk, England who served as Attorney-General during the reign of King Henry VII
He entered Cambridge University (Matric = Matriculation = admission of a student into the University, a ceremony) and admitted to Peterhouse, college (part of Cambridge University) in 1570 as Fell-Com. Fell-Com is short for Fellow Commoner which is the 1st of 3 ranks in which students were Matriculated. Peterhouse is the oldest college at Cambridge University
He was admitted at Lincoln's Inn from Furnival's Inn 30 July 1575 or 10 Aug 1575. The Honorable Society of Lincoln's Inn is one of four Inns of Court in London in which Barristers of England and Wales belong and where they are called to the Bar. The 3 ranks are students, barristers, and benchers. The student rank is open to all who have good character, that satisfy the educational requirements. Once they have obtained a law degree and "keep" the adequate number of terms of dining in the hall during the 7 dining periods in the year, the student qualifies to be called to the Bar. Then the Treasurer of the Inn during one of the 5 call days during the year, calls a student to the Bar and that student becomes a Barister. Furnival's Inn was a Inn of Chancery attached to Lincoln's Inn (which housed lawyers in London). Being Called to the Bar is essentially being licenced to practice law by arguing in court. Barristers are lawyers that argue in court while Solicitors are lawyers that only deal with the clients and the Barristers and don't argue in court. He was Called to the Bar in 1584. He became Governor of Lincoln's Inn in 1591
Sir Henry would further this lineal occupation and was admitted to Lincoln's Inn on 10 August 1575, and was later called to the Bar in 1584, and subsequently became governor of Lincoln's Inn in 1591
Between 1588 and 1589, he was Member of Parliament (MP) for St Ives, for Yarmouth in 1597 and 1601, and for Norwich from 1604 to 1611
Hobart was Steward of Norwich in 1595, made Serjeant from 1603 to 1606, and later served as Attorney for the Court of Wards in 1605 and Attorney General for England and Wales between 1606 and 1613. From 1613 to 1625, his abilities were further recognized and he was elevated to Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas
Having been Lord Chancellor to Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, he was also Chancellor and Lord Keeper of the Great Seal to Charles, Prince of Wales
He was conferred the honor of Knighthood in 1603, and was made Baronet, of Intwood in the County of Norfolk on 11 May 1611
Sir Henry Hobart, was respected for his knowledge and sophistication in matters of estate management. He successfully acquired a fair amount of Norfolk property, including the estates of Intwood in 1596 and Blickling in 1616, where he was buried on 4 January 1625
On 21 April 1590, he married Dorothy Bell, the daughter of Sir Robert Bell, in Blickling, Norfolk. They had twelve sons including John Hobart and four daughters ===============================================================================================
He was a Steward of Norwich in 1595 and he became a Bencher in 1596. A Bencher, or Master of the Bench, is a senior member of an Inn of Court in England and Wales and held office for life once elected. He then became a Reader in 1601-02 and 1602-03. A Reader is a British academic rank between senior (principal) lecturer and a professor. The title is given in recognition of research and scolarship (known in America as an Associate Professor). He became Serjeant-at-law in 1602. A Serjeant-at-Law (SL) is an order of Barristers at the English Bar that were the highest order of Counsel. Upon becoming Serjeants these lawyers ceased to be apprentices and withdrew from their INN and became part of one of the two Serjeant's Inns at either Chancery Lane or Fleet Street. A Serjeant enjoyed social precedence after Knights Bachelor and before Companions of the Bath and other orders. He became MP for St. Ives 1588-89, for Yarmouth 1597 & 1601, For Norwich 1604-1610. M.P. stands for Member of Parliament in reference to the lower House of Commons (which are democratically elected body by electoral districts called constituencies and hold their seats until Parliament is dissolved, for a maximum of 5 years). He was Knighted 23 July 1603. A Knight is the English term for a social position started in the middle ages, more modernly awarded in recognition for services rendered which are no longer necessarily martial in nature. All male Judges of the High Court of England and Wales are awarded the Knighthood (Knight Bachelor) and use the term Sir before their name. If they later obtain further honour, they may use a Kt. after their name to note this. He served as Attorney for the Court of Wards in 1605. The Court of Wards and Liveries was a court established to administer a system of feudal dues; as well as revenue collection and responsible also for wardship and livery issues. He became Attorney-General 4 July 1606-27 Oct 1613. Attorney-General for England and Wales is the chief legal advisor to the Crown in England and Wales, representing the Queen and the government in court, and has supervisory powers over prosecutions. Appointees must belong to either house of Parliament and typically are Barristers and Queens Counsil (not always however). He was created Baronet 11 May 1611. Baronet (abbreviated Bart or Bt) is the holder of a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown and it ranks between a Baron and a Knight. It ranks above all Knighthoods except the Order of the Garter and the Order of the Thistle. King James I erected the hereditary order of Baronet's in England May 1611 for the settlement of Ireland. He offered the dignity to 200 gentleman of good birth, with a clear estate of 1000 pounds a year, on the condition that each paid a sum equivalent of three years pay for 30 soldiers at 8 d (8 pence) per day per man into the King's Exchequer. Like knights, Baronet's use the title Sir before their name, but they are hereditary unlike Knights, so they pass their Baronetcy on to their eldest Son. There is also a territorial designation with the title. Sir Henry Hobart's baronetcy was of Intwood in the county of Norfolk. He passed this on to His eldest son John Hobart upon his death. He was Lord Chief Justice of C.P. from 26 Nov 1613-29 Dec 1625 upon his death. Lord Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas or Common Place (C.P.) was the 2nd highest common law court in the English legal system until 1880 when it was dissolved
As Chief Justice you were one of the highest judicial officials only behind the Lord High Chancellor and the Lord Chief Justice of the King's/Queen's Bench. He was the author of Reports in the Reign of James I. He served at some point as Lord Chancellor to Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales and Chancellor and Lord Keeper of the Great Seal to Charles, Prince of Wales. He was respected for his knowledge and sophistication in matters of estate management. He successfully acquired a fair amount of Norfolk property, including the estates of Intwood in 1596 and Blickling in 1616. Blickling Hall is a stately home in the village of Blickling north of Aylsham in Norfolk, England. The current Blickling Hall was built on the ruins of the old Boleyn property in the reign of James I, by Henry Hobart. The 1st Blickling Hall was once the possession of Sir Thomas Boleyn and the birthplace of his children Mary & George & possibly Anne Boleyn (but she may have been born at Hever Castle, where her family moved to in 1505). He died 29 Dec 1625 and was buried at Blickling Hall 4 Jan 1626. He married Dorothy Bell on 21 (or 22) April 1590, the daughter of Sir Robert Bell, in Blickling, Norfolk. He was father to 12 sons and 4 daughters including eldest son John, son Miles (1611), Robert (1623), Edward (1623), and Thomas (1620). ================== Source: Ancestry.com hints. |
