August worked in Germany for the generous sum of eight dollars a year, plus room, board and clothes. In spite of this small amount of cash he earned, he put aside enough money to take his family on the long, hard journey to America and on to Kewaunee County
August and Henriette and 2-year old son, Carl, left from the port of Hamburg, Prussia to come to Quebec City, Canada on April 15, 1856 on the sailing ship, Elise. They boarded another ship on which the family traveled to Town Nine, north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, an area now known as Mequon
August worked as a laborer here for about 8 years cutting railroad ties. In 1864 this family moved to Rio Creek where August had purchased a 40 acre farm through a government map in section 1 of Casco Town. He later purchased 40 acres north of the original plat

August and Henrietta had three sons born to them on this farm: Frederick, who died at the age of 5; Herman, who later farmed this land; and Theodore. August deeded this farm to his son Herman, and his wife, Mathilda. August and Henrietta lived with Herman and Mathilda until their death. Later the farm was deeded to John Hocks. |

The house is at 9 Andover St. and is the town's second oldest and one of its most historic structures. Formerly owned by eight generations of Abbots, it was sold in 1933 and is now privately owned and occupied
There were always a lot of Abbots in Andover. Born in 1761, Benjamin was the eighth child in his family, which gave the Abbots a running start on expanding the family name. Sometimes the name is spelled Abbott with two T's
I [Bill Dalton] understand that you can't tell which Abbots are related to other Abbots or Abbotts by the spelling, as the extra "T" was, for reasons unknown to [him], added by an Abbott family branch. ([he'd] welcome a better explanation)
Benjamin Abbot was 24 when he built the house for his bride, Sarah Farnum, in 1685. The house was on 75 acres along the Shawsheen River and was part of a bigger estate owned by Ben's father. Ben was rightfully nervous about Indians, for he'd lost a brother in an Indian raid and had another brother kidnapped. Although the brother was brought back within a few weeks by a friendly squaw (that must be an interesting story), it's easy to speculate that there was damage to Ben's emotional health
According to Kay Noyes (from a 1954 Townsman article), Ben built the house like a fort in order to withstand Indian attacks. In addition to thick walls, the water well was placed inside the structure. Besides being a convenience, the well allowed access to water if attackers set fire to the house
(Kay Noyes, a charming, vivacious person, was a local Andover historian who wrote often for the Townsman)
Abbot's emotional sensitivity apparently applied to more than just Indians. He became involved in a property line dispute with the owner of neighboring land, Martha (Allen) Carrier. Many thought her to be too strong-willed for a woman and she'd once had smallpox, a disease that diminished one's popularity. Martha, also called "Goody," was not one to stand down if she thought she was right. The price for the argument she had with Abbot was her life
Her husband, Thomas Carrier, was an historical mystery man. (I [Bill Dalton] wrote a column about him four years ago, which can be found at andovertownsman.com) He was a 7'4" tall Welshman, who lived to be 109 years old (according to contemporary records, although his family claimed it to be 113). He was also called Thomas Morgan, and he may have been involved with the execution of King Charles I in 1649. Thomas was possibly the executioner himself. Upon arriving (or escaping) to America, Thomas either stayed out of arguments or else people chose not to argue with him. His wife was not as sanguine, and when she argued with Ben Abbot, her anger got the better of her. She told him she'd be as close to him as the bark on a tree until the property issue was settled; then she cursed him for seven years
Ben was sensitive to Carrier's words, especially the curse, and he became bewitched, developing maladies such as a swollen foot and a giant pustule on his side that drained gallons of fluid. He accused Martha Carrier of being a witch, and she was tried and hung in Salem. Hers was the most famous witch trial, and she refused to confess, calling the witnesses liars and denying that the judges told the truth. The brilliant but compassion-challenged Cotton Mather said Satan had promised that she'd be his bride in Hell. Two of her children, adolescent boys, were tortured until they testified against her. They'd been bound heels to neck until it appeared their eyes would pop out
After she was arrested and executed, sensitive Ben recovered
By the 1890s, a more socially-pleasing Abbot occupied the house. Miss Mary Alice Abbot famously entertained during the "Gay 90s" by having tea parties beneath a giant elm on the front lawn of the house. The elm tree had stood for generations, and the legend was that the elm was sown by a stranger on horseback who stuck a mere switch in the ground. That switch grew into the beautiful tree
By 1919, the tree was ancient and nearing its end when a team of tree surgeons saved it. They removed wagon loads of rot, replacing it with cement. However, the successful work by the tree surgeons was overturned by Mother Nature, who brought down on New England the worst storm in its history. The Great Hurricane of 1938 took most of Andover's historical trees, including the Abbot Elm
