Burialafter November 1183He was buried after November 1183 at Buried in an unknown cemetery in the Bath and Northeast Somerset Unitary AuthorityG in Keynsham, Somersetshire, England (Medieval), EuropeG.2
NoteWilliam FitzRobert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester (died 1183) was the son and heir of Sir Robert de Caen, 1st Earl of Gloucester, and Mabel FitzRobert of Gloucester, daughter of Robert Fitzhamon and nephew of Empress Matilda

Lineage
William FitzRobert was the son of Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester, an illegitimate son of King Henry I of England, during whose reign William was born. Thus William was a nephew of the Empress Maud and a cousin of King Stephen, the principal combatants of the English Anarchy period. It also meant that William is the great-grandson of the famed William the Conqueror

Early career
In October 1141, William looked after the Baronial estates, when his father fell into the hands of partisans at Winchester. His father was exchanged for King Stephen, and during his father's absence in Normandy in 1144 he served as Governor of Wareham. In 1147, he overthrew Henry de Tracy at Castle Cary

In 1154 he made an alliance with Roger de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford, by which they agreed to aid each other against all men except Henry II of England

FitzRobert granted Neath, a town in Glamorgan, a charter. He was Lord of the manor of Glamorgan, as well as Caerleon, residing chiefly at Cardiff Castle. It was there that in 1158 he and his wife and son were captured by the Welsh Lord of Senghenydd, Ifor Bach ("Ivor the Little") and carried away into the woods, where they were held as prisoners until the Earl redressed Ivor's grievances

Relationship with King Henry II
In 1173 the earl took the King's part against his sons, but thereafter he appears to have fallen under suspicion, for the following year he submitted to the King, and in 1175 surrendered to him Bristol Castle. Because his only son and heir Robert died in 1166, Earl William made John, the younger son of King Henry II, heir to his earldom, in conformity with the King's promise that John should marry one of the Earl's daughters, if the Church would allow it, they being related in the third degree

Earl William was present in March 1177 when the King arbitrated between the Kings of Castile and Navarre, and in 1178, he witnessed Henry's charter to Waltham Abbey. But during the King's struggles with his sons, when he imprisoned a number of magnates of whose loyalty he was doubtful, Earl William was among them

Family and children
He was married to Hawise de Beaumont of Leicester, daughter of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester and Amica de Gael and had children:

Robert FitzWilliam (1151, Cardiff, Glamorganshire-1166, Cardiff, Glamorganshire)

Mabel FitzWilliam, married Amaury V de Montfort, her son Amaury briefly being Earl of Gloucester

Amice FitzWilliam, d. 1220. Married Richard de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford, their descendants eventually inherited the Earldom of Gloucester

Isabel, Countess of Gloucester; was married three times:
Prince John
Geoffrey FitzGeoffrey de Mandeville, 2nd Earl of Essex, Earl of Gloucester
Hubert de Burgh, 1st Earl of Kent

The earl died in 1183; his wife Hawise survived him. Since their only son, Robert, predeceased his father, their daughters became co-heirs to the feudal barony of Gloucester.

Helena Angelina Doukaina

F, #14174, Deceased, b. 1242, d. 15 March 1271
Pedigree Link

Biography

Birth1242Helena Angelina Doukaina was born in 1242 in Greece, EuropeG.
Marriage2 June 1259Manfred, I di Sicilia, and she were married on 2 June 1259. They married after the death of Manfred's first wife, Beatrice of Savoy in 1257
Death15 March 1271She died on 15 March 1271 at age ~29 at Castle of Nocera InferioreG in Salerno, Campania, Italy, EuropeG. The cause of her death (at the age of 29) on Sunday, March 15th, 1271 is not known-surviving in 1271 was difficult

Died as Queen Consort of Sicily
NameHelena Angelina Doukaina was also known as Elena, degli Angeli.
NoteHelena Angelina Doukaina (c. 1242-1271) was Queen of Sicily as the second wife of King Manfred. She was the daughter of Michael II Komnenos Doukas, Despot of Epirus, and Theodora Petraliphaina

Her marriage was an expression of the alliance of her father and the ruler of Sicily against the growing power of the Empire of Nicaea

She was married to Manfred of Sicily 2 June 1259, after the death of his first wife Beatrice of Savoy in 1257 and his own rise to the throne on 10 August 1258

D. J. Geanakoplos notes that this marriage was surprising, considering Manfred's father Frederick II had been in an alliance with John III Vatatzes, the late ruler of the Empire of Nicaea, but "one must consider that conquest of the Byzantine Empire had been a traditional Norman aim for almost a century, and that Manfred was now in a strong enough position in Italy to discard his father's alliance and to look to those who could assist him in his ambitions for Balkan domination." Few details of how this marriage was arranged have come down to us. "It would be of interest," Geanakoplos observes, "to know who took the initiative to promote the marriage alliance; whether Manfred's marriage preceded that of William of Achaea to Anna, another daughter of Michael II; and, most important, whether Manfred's Epirote possessions were secured from Michael II actually as a result of conquest or as a dowry."Manfred had captured Dyrrhachium and its surrounding area within the following two years. Michael II still had a territorial claim at the city but at the time was preparing to besiege Thessalonica. Helena's dowry included all rights to Dyrrhachium and its surrounding area along with the island of Corfu

Corfu was the only clear territorial gain for Manfred; he was killed at the Battle of Benevento on 26 February 1266 while fighting against his rival and successor Charles I of Sicily. Charles captured Helena and imprisoned her

She lived five years later in captivity into the Castle of Nocera Inferiore where she died in 1271

Helena and Manfred had five children:
Beatrix of Sicily (c. 1260-before 1307); imprisoned in Castel dell'Ovo until released, later married, firstly, Rainer Gherardesca, and secondly Manfred IV of Saluzzo

Frederick of Sicily (c. 1259-last mentioned alive in 1312), blinded and imprisoned in Castel del Monte

Henry of Sicily (May 1262-31 October 1318), blinded and imprisoned in Castel del Monte

Enzio of Sicily (c. 1261-c. 1301), blinded and imprisoned in Castel del Monte

Flordelis of Sicily (c. 1266-last mentioned alive in 1297), imprisoned in Castel dell'Ovo until released.
