Burial | after 12 June 897 | He was buried after 12 June 897 at Winchester Cathedral, Kingdom of WessexG, in Winchester, Hampshire, England (MiddleAges part of Anglo-Saxon Britain), EuropeG. |
Name | | Æthelhelm, Don's 34th GGF at the end of this branch, was also known as Ethelhelm Sigehelm. |
Note | | Æthelhelm of Wiltshire was an Ealdorman see Historical Fact
Genealogist David H. Kelley and historian Pauline Stafford have identified him as Æthelhelm, a son of Edward's uncle, King Æthelred of Wessex
Other historians have rejected the idea, arguing that it does not appear to have been the practice for Æthelings (Princes of the royal dynasty who were eligible to be king) to become ealdormen, that in a grant from King Alfred to Ealdorman Æthelhelm there is no reference to kinship between them, and that the hostile reception to King Eadwig's marriage to Ælfgifu, his third cousin once removed, shows that a marriage between Edward and his first cousin once removed would have been forbidden as incestuous. |
Historical fact | | He This Æthelhelm was an Ealdorman and not a prince; see note. Æthelhelm, Ealdorman of Wiltshire see http://www.rpi.edu/~holmes/Hobbies/Genealo
Not the Æthelhelm, son of King Æthelred: if he was, his daughter would not have been allowed to marry Edward the Elder, it would have been incest
source geni.com Æthelhel aka "Aethehelm", "Æthelhelm"
DOB circa 859 in Wessex, England. death: 898 in Wantage, Berkshire, England. buried Compton and Crondall by King Alfred the Great
Immediate Family: Son of Ethelred I 'the Pious', king of Wessex & Kent and Wulfthryth
Husband of Elswitha of Wessex and Mercia
Father of Æthelfrith of Wessex and Mercia, Earl of Mercia
Brother of Æthelwold, King Of York & East Anglia
Occupation: Earl of Wiltshire, Thegn (godseier) hos Kong Edvard, Archevêque de Canterbury, Ealdorman of Wiltshire, Ealdorman of Kent
************************************************************************** Æthelhelm, Ealdorman of Wiltshire. Father of Ælfflæd, second wife of King Edward
Grand father of King Ælfweard of Wessex, Queen Eadgifu of West Francia, Queen Eadgyth of Germany as well other grandchildren.
Æthelhelm's parentage is not known.
Æthelhelm's daughter Ælfflæd married King Edward the Elder. Had Æthelhelm been the son of King Æthelred I then Ælfflæd and Edward would have been cousins, sharing the same grandfather, and would not have been allowed to marry. Other marriages of the time between 2nd and 3rd cousins were deemed incestuous and not allowed therefore it is certain that a marriage of this closeness would most certainly not have been tolerated.
Æthelhelm the Ealdorman and Æthelhelm, Prince of Wessex were definitely contemporaries, alive at the same time and moving in the same circles. A grant from King Alfred makes it plain that the 2 men are not the same
The grant from Alfred to Ealdorman Æthelhelm makes no mention of the Ealdorman being his nephew, there is no reference to kinship between them at all. Additionally, it was not the practice of æthelings to become ealdormen, as princes of royal blood who were eligible to become king, they already held status in their own right, already held land in their own right. They did not need a special appointment to have power or hold land as they already had that privilege by being royal.
In 893 Æthelhelm participated in the successful besiegement and defeat of the Danes at the Battle of Buttington. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 893 "Æthelred and ealdorman Æthelhelm and ealdorman Æthelnoth" besieged and later defeated the Danes "at Buttington on Severn shore"
According to the Anglo-Saxon historian Æthelweard writing nearly a hundred years later, "Hastein made a rush with a large force from Benfleet, and ravaged savagely through all the lands of the Mercians, until he and his men reached the borders of the Welsh; the army stationed then in the east of the country gave them support, and the Northumbrian one similarly. The famous Ealdorman Æthelhelm made open preparation with a cavalry force, and gave pursuit together with the western English army under the generalship of Æthelnoth. And King (sic) Æthelred of the Mercians was afterwards present with them, being at hand with a large army."
This is in fact additional proof that Ealdorman Æthelhelm and Prince Æthelhelm were NOT the same person for the prince was not alive in 893 to participate in the battle. Prince Æthelhelm is believed to have he died about 890.
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records the death of "Æthelhelm ealdorman of Wiltshire" in 897 "nine nights before midsummer" ( June 12, 897) --------------- A fictional character in the TV show 'The Last Kingdom' is based loosely upon the real Æthelhelm of Wiltshire, however, is not historically accurate. An example of this is that Æthelhelm never captured Uchtred of Bamburgh, they lived in entirely different centuries |

Bernard Lombard was born probably at Thorncombe, Dorset, ca. 1608
On 20 February 1668/69 he deposed that he was about age sixty (MD 17:109) and that he was the son of Thomas Lombard, q.v
[much of the information below is from Robert S. Wakefield, "The Lombard Family of Barnstable, Mass.," TAG 52:136-39]
Bernard was first at Dorchester with his father. Moving to Plymouth County, he lived at Scituate, where he and his wife joined Lothrop's church 19 April 1635; he had a house at Scituate by 1636, and his daughter Mary was baptized there 8 October 1637 (NEHGR 10:42, 9:279, 281)
He became a Plymouth freeman 3 January 1636/37 (PCR 1:48). In 1639 he moved to Barnstable with the Lothrop group. On 10 October 1643 the court ordered that if the townsmen of Barnstable did not appoint a place for their defense, it would have Mr. Thomas Dimmack, Anthony Annable, Henry Cobb, Henry Cogan, and Bernard Lombard do it (PCR 2:65)
On 2 June 1646 Bernard Lombard was on the grand jury (PCR 2:102), a position he held a number of times
On 5 October 1652 he was approved by the court as ensign for the Barnstable military company (PCR 3:17)
On 9 June 1653 Gyles Rickard was presented for lascivious carriage toward Mary Lombard, the daughter of Bernard Lombard (PCR 3:36)
His children were Thomas, who married Elizabeth Derby; Abigail (also called Abia), who married James Claghorn; Mary, who married George Lewis; Martha, who married John Martin; and Jabez, who married Sarah Derby
In his 1668/69 deposition, Bernard called William Clark of Yarmouth "Father Clarke" and testified to Clarke's nuncupative will leaving everything he had to Joseph Benjamin, Bernard's brother-in-law (MD 17:109.) |
