The Burning Bed

She also shared her hatred (which was from Don's watching of her body language) about Les Jr. who, (according to her) had just looked on as she was being beaten by his father, even though she had gone over to Les Jr. for help… same truth thread

This is presumed to have been when Les Jr. was old enough to defend her before Les Jr. left for College in Madison7

Good Morning!

For those that don’t know me, I am Sandra, Jeanette’s daughter. And I want to welcome you to Mom’s Celebration of Life. I want to say a few words on behalf of my Sister Amy, Brother Brian and my two sisters-in-law, Margaret and Marie

Jeanette Mae Smith… Pagel… Arndt… and once again… Pagel, was a complicated woman

Born in Suring on May 19, 1932, to Joe and Mabel Smith. She was the youngest of 4 kids. While she was a child of the depression and World War 2 her family was relatively well off, as her father was the President and head cashier at the Suring State Bank… a fact she never let any…one… forget

She has spoken many times of her happy childhood in Suring. She and her siblings would swim in the river behind her parent’s house and for many summers her Dad would set up an old, large army surplus tent in the park at Kelly Lake and they would spend the entire summer camping there. Of course, she never told me this until I was well into middle age! As kids we only went swimming at Kelly Lake 3 or 4 times a season due to all the farm chores we had. Kelly Lake has always been a special place for her. She loved her summers there as a child, she met her future husband there at the dances at the Round Roof and resided on Kelly Lake for the last 40 + years of her life, until entering Assisted Living at the Cottages [at the Meadowlands Senior Living hospice in Oconto Falls]

When I think of seeing my mother at her happiest, it was dancing with my father at the Round Roof (or in Spruce). She and my father were great dance partners. Dad liked to dance, too, and he would sweep Mom off her feet and twirl her around the dance floor like she was a little rag doll and she loved it!

Mom excelled in school and was an avid reader. She told me not that long ago, that she was the real Valedictorian of her class. She claims the principal pulled her aside and admitted Mom had the grades for it, and was tied for the honor, but that he had to give it to the boy…. That’s her story and she stuck to it

After high school, Mom left Suring and attended Stout University in Menominee, to study Home Economics. She wanted to be a Home Economics teacher. After 2 years, she left university to marry Les Pagel. Mom and Dad farmed in Spruce from 1952 to 1981, and she put her Home Economics learning to good use. She could bake like the best… we always had homemade bread and rolls, cakes, pies, pudding… she loved to cook! It’s no wonder we all packed too many pounds!

Mom was a great gardener. On the farm, she planted a very large garden every year. She definitely had a green thumb and we would can and freeze produce all summer. But her great love was flowers. Gladiolas, dahlias, lilacs, and more. She gardened until she went to assisted living. The last years before that, she would put in a garden despite the deer eating every twig of it. She had an innate need to grow things

She also put her teaching skills to use. She will forever live in my head… “stand up straight!, Pull your shoulders back!, do your homework, pick up that penny, you’re going to wear that?” She taught all of us (some more than others), how to cook and bake, garden, and the importance of saving and investing. She taught me how to sew. She was a leader in the Spruce Aces 4-H club, leading the music program and other activities

Mom’s sanity saver during those intense farming and child raising years was bowling. Dolly Yashinsky, Noni Dobratz, Bonnie Monfort, Darlene Treptow, Sylvia Kamke, Grace Hyland, Linda Rabas and a few I probably missed… all had good times and they all meant so much to her

Mom bore 7 children: Kathryn, Leslie Jr., myself (Sandra) , Daniel, Randall, Amy and Brian. The greatest sadness of her life was the passing of 4 of her children before her… especially Kathy who died in an accident on the farm when she was only 14 years old. She never got over the death of her first born and grieved for her until the day she died. She always believed her life would have been so different had Kathy not died

After Mom and Dad sold the farm to Dan and Marie, they built the house on Kelly Lake. They had a pontoon boat and spent many happy days on Kelly Lake. Together they traveled and often spent the winters in South Texas. In her retirement, she also became an excellent golfer

After Dad passed in September of 1989, Mom went back to college at UWGB and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Development. She was so proud of her degree… something she longed for ever since leaving college in 1952. And just as she was graduating from college, she married Bob Arndt, a long-time friend and farmer in the Lena area. They had many years of fun traveling in their RV and golfing

That’s her biography, but who was she? As I said at the beginning, she was a complicated woman. She was incredibly smart, she read everything she could get her hands on and always said that her greatest enjoyment was to curl up with a good book and did so until she could no longer

She was fiercely proud. Proud to be the banker’s daughter, proud of her children, proud of her and dad’s accomplishments on the farm

She was a woman of her generation. As a 1950’s housewife and Farmer’s wife she was saddled with all the limitations of a woman of that time. Like many women of that age, she pondered what her life would have been like had she had a career of her own. But she channeled that desire for education and career into her children… constantly instructing us to study, go to college… get an education… never be dependent on anyone!

Mom was famously known for lacking a filter. She said whatever came into her mind. Her moral code demanded absolute honesty as she saw it. “Gees you got fat!, What did you do to your hair? Don’t you have anything better to wear than that!” And she said all these things just last year!!! She meant well and somehow thought that feedback would actually make us listen to her, but we are just as stubborn as she. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree

Mom was a lifelong and devout Catholic and had great faith, attended church weekly and attended the mass at the Cottages. She belonged to Sacred Heart Church until it closed in the early 2000’s, which is when she re-joined St. Michael’s in Suring which is where she was christened as a child and married as a young woman. She sang in the choir and actively supported many activities the church sponsored (Ladies Aid, Funeral Suppers, and more)

She spent many hours at the Cottages praying for a peaceful and swift passing, for all the people she loved and for the faith that she would soon be reunited with her deceased children and friends in heaven. I hope God has granted her that wish… she deserves it

Thank you all for being here today
