He moved to No. 147 in 1781 and lived in town until Dec 30, 1810, when he and his wifeAbigail received a "letter of dismission to any church they may haveopportunity to enjoy" and their after life and death is unknown, exceptit is reported they removed to some part of Vermont. During hisresidence in Surry he was the most prominent citizen; served as townclerk 1782-87; moderator, 1790-93; selectman, 1782, 90 and 94; treasurer,1782-87; represented Surry, Alstead and Marlow in the General Court,1783, and at the 4th Constitutional Convention, Sept 7 1791; was electeda member of the Governor's Council, 1790, which office he held for fouryears. He was judge of the Court of Common Pleas for the county ofCheshire until 1808, when debarred on account of age. He also wasProprietors clerk several years, and held other positions of trust andresponsibility. His dwelling stood at the foot of Bald Hill, and he isdescribed as being an agreeable and courteous gentlemen of strictintegrity. A more extended account of Judge Holmes is given in theHistory of Cheshire & Sullivan Counties, N.H. by D. Hamilton Hurd, 1886. "History of Newburg, Vermont, Wells: Honorable Lemuel Holmes, born about 1737; served in the French and Indianwar. In the war of independence he was lieutenant in a company of Rangersfrom Jan 1, 1776, and was for bravery promoted to be captain by specialorder of General Washington, Sept 1, 1776. He was captured at FortWashington, Nov 16 in the same year, and kept prisoner till Sept 20,1778. After his release he was detained five weeks in New York. In 1780he petitioned Congress for relief on account of his sufferings andobtained from that body a grant of 80 pounds. He settled in Surry, N.H.where he was deacon in the Congregational church and town clerk. Townrepresentative for Gilsum and Surry several years between 1764 and 1786,1790-1792. Councillor, 1790-94; Judge of the Court of Common Pleas forCheshire Co until 1808, when he became incapacitated by reaching the ageof 70 years. Some years later, about 1814, he came to Newbury to livewith his son, Asa, who carried on the farm now owned by F.E. Kimball,where he closed his long eventful and useful life, Nov 2, 1822, aged 85.He was buried at the Ox-box, where his gravestone may still be seen. Hewas very prominent in New Hampshire in his day. Abigail (Bicknell), hiswife, died May 15, 1817, aged 75.
