Name | | William Fytche was also known as Fecche Ficche Fycche Fiche Fyche, (See Note.) |
Note | | This story is from Bill Putnam (at http://www.billputman.com/Fitch.pdf) and J. A. Kratzner's research
The Fitch Family (where there are numerous spelling variations, as can be seen with William) was originally Germanic, coming into England from Saxony in the 1200s
The family was then living in Fitch Castle in Widdington Parish, some fifty miles due north of London in Stanstead, Essex
From such ancient days, it can be extremely hard to accurately trace people back, as records were not very orderly (if they existed at all) / there are, however, linkages of the castle and family back to the Battle of Hastings in 1066: William the Conqueror gave the Manor of Wraysbury as a special donation to his blood relative, Robert de Gernon [ancestral link to the Fitz(xxx) family], who held it as part of his barony of which the head was at Stanstead-Montfitchet in Essex
Here he built a castle on a hill which was artificially raised for the foundation. This castle he presented to his youngest son. William de Gernon, who in accordance with the custom of the time, dropped the patronymic of de Gernon and assumed the appellative, 'Montfitchet. (Gylls 'History of Wraysbury')
William married Margaret, daughter of Gilbert, 2nd Lord of Clare, and had a son, Gilbert de Montfitchet, who had a son, Richard de Montfitchet
The tree linkages are not yet established in a solid way, but the focal person, William Fytche, was born in about 1400, most likely in Fitch Castle
He is listed in a court record in 1428 as William Fecche, again in 1435 as William Ficche and again in 1436 as William Fycche. He lived in Bonhunt, later called Wicken Bonhunt ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicken_Bonhunt ) when the two manors were combined into a town, likely an early part of Stanstead
By 1440, William had acquired new lands and moved a few miles away to the town of Widdington. By 1450, he was titled as Yeoman (a British term for a farmer who owns land) living in Wicken, meaning that he owned his lands outright and was no longer a tenant farmer on another's land. William was married, but there are no clues as to her name. He died in early 1466, leaving the two acres that he owned to his son and heir, John Fytche. |
