Note | | *MAGNA CARTA SUPPORTER*
One of the outstanding examples, if not the most outstanding, of the perfect knight of European feudal chivalry who acted with honesty, decision and perfect loyalty to the royal family at the beginning of the Plantagenet dynasty:
William the Marshall (of Henry II, King of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine) who led the crusade of 1183-1186; Earl of Strigoil and Lord of Leinster in 1189; Earl of Strigoil and Lord of Leinster in 1189; Lord of Longueville in 1190; Hereditary Master Marshall of England 1194 to his death in 1219; 4th Earl of Pembroke 1199-1219; ruled England as Viceroy during King John's absence 1206 and 1214; and Supporter of the Magna Carta 1215 and 1217
William the Marshall was the nephew of the Count of Salisbury and was knighted at Drincourt in 1173. He distinguished himself in battle with the Lusignans defending Eleanor of Aquitaine, divorced wife of Louis VII, King of France, and then wife of Henry II, 23rd King of England
His horse was killed under him and with his back to a hedgerow he fought "like a boar, or the dogs" against sixty men until one from the rear pierced his thigh with a javelin through the hedge and he was captured; Eleanor paid his ransom and had him re-equipped with horse and equipment
An example of William the Marshall and Richard the Lion Heart chivalry: in the last year of Henry II's reign Richard the Lion Heart was leading a rebellion against his father, Henry II, and after his army had defeated Henry at Le Mans, Richard was pressing hard on Henry's route at the very front of his cavalry without even wearing his armor and mail. In the rearguard of Henry's beaten army stood Henry's faithful warrior, William the Marshall. The Marshall confronted Richard and had him at his mercy. "Spare me. It would be wrong, I am not armed" cried Richard, and the Marshall turned his lance from pointing toward Richard to a straight hit and downed Richard"s horse and killed it, saying, "I will not slay you. The Devil may slay you."
Within the year, Henry II died and his son, Richard became King. King Richard rose above his recent humiliation by confirming the Marshall, his father's true servant, in all his offices and honors and sent him to England to act in his name. Richard gave the Marshall in marriage to the rich Crown heiress of Pembroke, making him one of the most powerful and wealthiest of all English barons
Upon Henry II's death in 1189, the Crown of England was disputed by John, Henry's youngest son, and Arthur, son of Geoffrey (Henry's eldest son). The Archbishop of Canterbury, Hubert Gautier, was in favor of naming Arthur, but upon the insistence of The Marshall, acting with honesty and decision, the Archbishop with the Papal Legate, named the boy John King, Grantor of the Magna Charta. Had The Marshall failed in his duty to the Crown, the strong centralized monarchy which Henry the II had created, and upon which the growing civilisation of the realm depended, might have degenerated into a heptarchy of feudal princes
