Nels and Katie ( Petersen ) Larsen family
Nels P. Larsen, a younger brother of Anna Marie, a link in Jeanette Smith's tree (mother of Sandra) was born in Omaha in August of 1876 as the son of Lars C. Larsen and Karen Andersen Larsen. Lars had returned to and settled back in Omaha with his parents, Neils and Mattie Larsen after making the trip with handcarts and 60 wagons on the Mormon Trail to Salt Lake City in the early 1860's. They had become disillusioned with Mormonism and left with eight other families under the cover of darkness in 1866 and returned to Omaha, the origin of their trek several years earlier
In 1878 Nels, at the age of 2, traveled with his parents from Omaha to Lowell. Lars rented a rail car to transport their belongings, and Lowell was the end of the rail service. They were met by other family members who already lived here. Nel's family settled five miles south-east of Minden
As a boy Nels attended Daneville School which was one-half mile east of the farm. Katie Petersen also attended this school and in 1905 they were married. Nels had been living and farming with an uncle on the place. After the marriage they continued to live there for 45 years. Nels and Katie had four children: Fred, Laura, James, and Anabel. All of the children attended District 15, East Belle School, located one-fourth mile west of the farm. It was a daily chore of the school children to have someone walk to Nels' and bring water back to the school
James started farming with his father while in high school with hogs as his ag project. James went to Iowa in the late 1930's with his cousins, David and Louis Larsen and Richard Petersen, to pick corn, as there were no crops in Kearney County those years. A portion of his $3 a day salary was brought home to make payments on a tractor. While in Iowa for four winters, he met and married Helen Holden in 1942
After a year in the service, he was discharged to return to farming. James and his father farmed together until Nels' death
Charles and Roberta were born to James and Helen. After teaching school for five years, 'Chuck' moved to the farm in 1971 with his wife, Nancy Kenall, whom he had met in college. James and Chuck farmed together until the mid-1980's when James retired. Nancy and Chuck have two children, Wiley and Katie
In 2002 Wiley returned to Minden after eight years of teaching and is now involved in the farming operation with his parents
Today Anabel lives in Omaha; Helen, Roberta, Wiley, Katie and twins, Destiny and Montana, live in Minden. Since Neils's arrival from Denmark in 1863, seven generations of the Larsen family have been living in Nebraska
Charles J. and Nancy L. Larsen, owners transcribed from "Minden Courier" newspaper article dated July 9, 2003. |
