Name | | Owain Dwnn Tudor, ap Maredudd (of Wales), was also known as Owen Meredith Tudor, of Wales. |
Name | | He was also known as Owain ap Maredudd ap Tudur. |
Note | | Welsh Aristocracy
His Welsh name (Owen ap Meredydd) was commonly known as "Owen Tudor"…. he was the founder of the Tudor dynasty; the five sovereigns of the dynasty are among the most well-known figures in Royal history
Owen was a descendant of the Welsh Prince Rhys ap Gruffudd and began his life at court by appearing as a squire at the court of the infant King Henry VI
By all accounts he was a handsome man who caught the eye of the Queen Mother, Catherine of Valois, who gave him a post in her household
Around 1428 it was common knowledge that Owne Tudor and Catherine of France were living together as man and wife, but it has yet to be found the time or place of the marriage
Five children were born to Owen and Catherine, two of them being Edmund and Jasper
In 1436 (when Owen Tudor was imprisoned) Catherine retired to Bermondsey Abbey, where she died on the 3rd of January 1437
Owen was released and allowed to go back to Wales but he was then arrested and taken to Newgate. He escaped and went back to Wales
When Henry VI was of age he made provisions for Owen, who took the red rose and fought bravely and strongly for it. His last battle came at Mortimer's Cross on February 4, 1460 where he was captured by the Yorkists. They beheaded him in Hereford market place and set up his head on the market cross. Historical fact | 2 February 1461 | He See note; at Battle of Mortimer's Cross, near KinglandG, in Mortimer's Cross, Herefordshire, England (Medieval), EuropeG, on 2 February 1461. The Battle of Mortimer's Cross was held on February, 2nd 1461, the middle of winter, well outside the normal campaign season where Owen was captured and then executed in Hereford 2 days after
This was a major battle of the Wars of the Roses and took place when Edward, Earl of March (who later became Edward IV) deployed the Yorkist army, probably on the ground of his choosing, intercepting and defeating the Lancastrian army that was marching into England from South Wales, led by Jasper Tudor, Earl of Pembroke (son of Owen) and other nobles loyal to the King Henry VI of the House of Lancaster, his Queen Margaret of Anjou and their seven-year-old son Edward, Prince of Wales
The armies were possibly each just 2-3,000 on each side and losses are uncertain, but with claims of 4,000 deaths. Nothing else is formally known of the details of the action, and unfortunately this is one of the most poorly documented of all the battles of the Wars of the Roses; cannot be sure exactly where the action was fought between Mortimer's Cross and Kingsland
The battlefield landscape has also, in parts at least, been transformed from that which existed in 1461. Hedged enclosures have replaced open field and meadow on the low lying land, while the route of the London to Aberystwyth road across the battlefield has been completely abandoned and replaced by 18th century turnpike routes. However in the future a study of the historic terrain may allow the earlier pattern to be recovered and a survey for the archaeology of the battle may resolve some of the questions about the location and nature of the action
Despite the uncertainties about the location of the action this is a pleasant landscape to visit and it is possible to explore the various options by driving and walking the battlefield. There are also a number of interesting places nearby with related or other military interest to make a visit worthwhile.4 |

Issue: Henry Beaumont, 3rd Baron Beaumont Matilda de Courtenay Richard FitzAlan, 11th Earl of Arundel John FitzAlan, 1st Baron Arundel Thomas Arundel, Archbishop of Canterbury Joan Fitzalan, Countess of Hereford Alice Fitzalan, Countess of Kent Mary Fitzalan, Lady strange of Blackmere Eleanor Fitzalan
Father: Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster Mother: Maud Chaworth
Born: 11 September 1318 Died: 11 January 1372 (aged 60) in Arundel Burial: Lewes Priory, Sussex ================================================= Eleanor of Lancaster, Countess of Arundel (sometimes called Eleanor Plantagenêt), 11 September 1311-1318 to 11 January 1372 was the fifth daughter of Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster and Maud Chaworth ================================================= First marriage and issue
Eleanor married first on 6 November 1330 to John de Beaumont, 2nd Baron Beaumont (d.1342), son of Henry Beaumont, 4th Earl of Buchan, 1st Baron Beaumont (c.1288-1340) by his wife Alice Comyn (1289-3 July 1349)
John died in a tournament on 14 April 1342
They had one son, born to Eleanor in Ghent whilst serving as lady-in-waiting to Queen Philippa of Hainault:
Henry Beaumont, 3rd Baron Beaumont, (4 April 1340-17 June 1369), the first husband of Lady Margaret de Vere (d. 15 June 1398), the daughter of John de Vere, 7th Earl of Oxford by his wife Maud de Badlesmere
Henry and Margaret had one son: John Beaumont, 4th Baron Beaumont KG (1361-1396)
Second marriage On 5 February 1344 at Ditton Church, stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, she married Richard FitzAlan, 10th Earl of Arundel
His previous marriage, to Isabel le Despenser, had taken place when they were children
It was annulled by Papal mandate as she, since her father's attainder and execution, had ceased to be of any importance to him. Pope Clement VI obligingly annulled the marriage, bastardized the issue, and provided a dispensation for his second marriage to the woman with whom he had been living in adultery (the dispensation, dated 4 March 1344/1345, was required because his first and second wives were first cousins) ================================================= The children of Eleanor's second marriage were:
Richard (1346-1397), who succeeded as Earl of Arundel John Fitzalan (bef 1349-1379) Thomas Arundel, Archbishop of Canterbury (c. 1353-19 February 1413)
Lady Joan FitzAlan (1347/1348-7 April 1419), married Humphrey de Bohun, 7th Earl of Hereford
Lady Alice FitzAlan (1350-17 March 1416), married Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent (Thomas Holand)
Lady Mary FitzAlan (died 29 August 1396), married John le strange, 4th Lord strange of Blackmere, by whom she had issue Lady Eleanor FitzAlan (1356-before 1366) ================================================= Later life
The tomb effigy of Eleanor and Richard Fitzalan is in Chichester Cathedral
Eleanor died at Arundel and was buried at Lewes Priory in Lewes, Sussex, England
Her husband survived her by four years, and was buried beside her; in his will Richard requests to be buried "near to the tomb of Eleanor de Lancaster, my wife; and I desire that my tomb be no higher than hers, that no men at arms, horses, hearse, or other pomp, be used at my funeral, but only five torches as was about the corpse of my wife, be allowed" ================================================= Sources > Fowler, Kenneth. Lines: 17-30, 21-30, 28-33, 97-33, 114-31 ================================================= Notes (1) The surname "Plantagenêt" has been retrospectively applied to the descendants of Geoffrey V, Count of Anjou and Empress Matilda without historical justification: it is simply a convenient, if deceptive, method of referring to people who had, in fact, no surname
The first descendant of Geoffrey to use the surname was Richard Plantagenêt, 3rd Duke of York (father of both Edward IV of England and Richard III of England) who apparently assumed it about 1448
(2) also called Richard de Arundel. |
