Biography
Birth | 24 March 1639 | Benjamin Hull was born on 24 March 1639 in Barnstable, Colonial County of Barnstable, The Plymouth Colony (West of the Cape Cod Bay), British Colonial America (North America)G+. |
Marriage | 1668 | He and Rachel York were married in 1668 at Oyster RiverG in Durham, County of Strafford, Colony of New Hampshire, British Colonial America (North America)G. |
Death | November 1713 | He died in November 1713 at age 74 in Piscataway, Middlesex Colonial County, Colony of New Jersey, British Colonial America (North America)G. The cause of his death (at the age of 74) in November, 1713 is not known-surviving in 1713 was difficult & it occurred in the pre-1776 Colony of New Jersey |
Burial | after 1713 | He was buried after 1713 at Buried in Blackford-Clawson Cemetery at 364 Dryden StreetG in Piscataway, Middlesex Colonial County, Colony of New Jersey, British Colonial America (North America)G. From Find-a-Grave: "Benjamin Hull, of Piscataway, New Jersey, was a son of the Reverend Joseph Hull and his wife Agnes
He was baptized at Hingham, Massachusetts on 22 March 1639 by the Rev. Mr. Hobart. As a boy his family moved to Maine and he eventually settled in New Hampshire. He was married about 1668 to Rachel Yorke, a daughter of Richard Yorke, of Dover, New Hampshire. He settled in the colony of New Jersey by the late 1670s where he owned and operated a tavern and served as a selectman"
It also shows 2 different burial sites:
1) The entry linked above cites it as the Hull Family Burial Ground in Piscataway, "a private family cemetery located on land owned by Benjamin Hull (1639-1713). It is now defunct." The only mention I can find of it is on Find-a-Grave, and there's no other information (like a street address or map coordinates). The page says there are "no extant inscribed marker." Makes me wonder how Find-a-Grave knew and makes me wish yet again that Find-a-Grave supplied sources!
2) Another Find-a-Grave entry gave burial in the Blackford-Clawson Cemetery, 364 Dryden Street, Piscataway Township was founded in 1757, which might rule out a burial in 1741. See www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hull-1031
There's a website for the Piscatawaytown Burial Grounds, 2136 Woodbridge Ave., Edison, NJ. These are on the grounds of what was once a Baptist Church, but the Hull-Yorks aren't listed
http://www.interment.net/data/us/nj/middlesex/piscataway/index.htm |
Note | | In 1659, he received a 100-acre tract of land southwest of Lamprey Falls, Colonial County of Strafford, New Hampshire, and from 1659 to 1669 he paid taxes at Oyster River (present-day Durham, Strafford County)
Around 1668, he married RACHEL-2 YORK, probably in Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire who was the daughter of Richard York of Dover and his wife Elizabeth---They had eleven children
He served in the Indian Wars in Capt. Robert Mason's troop of horse, and was eventually commissioned a Captain
He also served on a jury in 1657
On 18 December 1666, Benjamin's brother Hopewell and three others acquired 40,000 acres for a colony on the Raritan River in New Jersey, in a place that later became the township of Piscataway, Middlesex County
On 30 May 1668, Benjamin and three others were added as associate proprietors. He appears to have moved back and forth between his old and new homes
On 11 December 1674, he and three others were appointed to view (survey) the meadows on the other side of the Raritan River. He had acquired personal land by 1675, when he is listed as owning 148 acres
He next appears on a 1676 list with a 120 acre land grant. Still, he had not completely severed his ties to New Hampshire; it was not until 22 March 1678 that he sold his lands at Cocheco (present-day Dover) to John Rand, and permanently moved to Piscataway. His total land holdings there eventually contained 498 acres
That same year, on 2 September, he was granted a license to keep a tavern at Piscataway. It was located on what later became Woodbridge Avenue, opposite the present-day St. James Church; from "Benjamin Hull (1639-1713) and Rachel Yorke" by Jay G. Hull: "The building of Hull’s tavern stood opposite the present St. James Episcopal Church on the north side of Woodbridge Avenue, where there is now the residence of the Episcopal Rector. It was a 'good, large Stone-House' situated 'half a mile above the Raritan Landing in 1679' with Doctor Greenland, John Langstaff, and John Smalley as neighbors. By 1686, Benjamin had acquired 498 acres composed of orchards, meadows, and wooded land in and around Piscataway and Woodbridge. He was the largest landowner in the area for a number of years and was taxed at the rate of ten pounds annually."
In 1679, the New Jersey General Assembly met in Piscataway-most likely, it is thought, at Hull's Tavern
In 1695, the General Assembly taxed innkeepers along the highway from Piscataway to Woodbridge to Elizabethtown for five years to keep the road in good repair. Benjamin and a neighboring innkeeper were required to pay £3
Benjamin served in several civic posts. In 1683, he served on a committee to treaty with the Governor "about patenting the Towne Shipe and about the meadows on the lower side of the South River." In 1684, he was on a committee to lay out highways, landings and other conveniences for the town. He also served as Constable. In 1692, he was chosen one of five town Selectmen "to see the Meeting house finished, to cause the Stocks and Pound to be repaired, to cause the high wayes to be repaired and to lay out high wayes, to get in the Old wrates, to take an account of the Townes debts and payinge the same, to take care that the Townes Rates be duly made gathered and paid to such persons as the towne is indebted to, to take care that no such person or persons of evill fame be received into the Towne, to looke after and take care of such poor or Laime that shall so happen to be by act of Providence etc., and to do any and every other such other acts or things as may be for the good and welfare of the said Towne."
His name appears in the town records several times in connection with a variety of court cases. For example, in 1686, a woman named Ann was indicted for stealing three gallons of molasses from Benjamin. In 1687, he sued John Jennings for £12.14.10. The court found for Benjamin, and the record notes: "The defendant has not money to pay the same, [and thus] bound himself a servant to said Hull for the space of three years for the payment of the money and Hull accepts the same." In addition, even though he was an innkeeper, as the foreman of a grand jury in December, 1692, he indicted several persons for drunkenness and breach of the Sabbath. In fact, in June 1694 he himself was "presented by ye grand jury for keeping and allowing gaming at Cards and Bowle and pins at his house." He had been found guilty of the same offense in 1686
Again, from "Benjamin Hull (1639-1713) and Rachel Yorke" by Jay G. Hull: "Benjamin himself lived out his life in Piscataway and remained well-off until his death in 1713. Thus, the records show numerous transfers of land to and from him and as an example of the style of living to which he was accustomed there exists in the D.A.R. Hall in Washington, D.C. (California Room) a simple but elegant grandfather clock reputed to have been his."
He died in Piscataway around 1713; there is presently no record of Rachel's death. Their probate documents have so far proved elusive. |
