Geoffrey V [in Ancient People & Artifacts]
Biography
Birth | 24 August 1113 | Geoffroy d'Anjou, V; Don's 25th GGF (in another branch) and the creator of the Plantagenêt dynasty, was born on 24 August 1113 in Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire, France (Medieval), EuropeG.1,2 |
Marriage | 22 May 1127 | He and Matilda Alice Adelaide Beauclerc, Don's 25th GGM (in another branch), were married on 22 May 1127 at Le MansG, in Pays de la Loire, France (Medieval), EuropeG. |
Death | 7 September 1151 | He died on 7 September 1151 at age 38 at Château Eure-et-LoireG in Rhône-Alpes, France (Medieval), EuropeG. The unsourced cause of his death (at the age of 38) on Friday, September 7th, 1151 (according to John of Marmoutier) was that Geoffroy was returning from a royal council in Medieval France when he was stricken with a fever at Château-du-Loir, whereupon he collapsed on a couch and died |
Burial | after 7 September 1151 | He was buried after 7 September 1151 at Buried in an unknown cemetery in Le MansG, in Pays de la Loire, France (Medieval), EuropeG. |
Name | | Geoffroy d'Anjou, V; Don's 25th GGF (in another branch) and the creator of the Plantagenêt dynasty, was also known as Geoffroy "The Fair." |
Name | | He was also known as Geoffrey, English spelling. |
Name | | He was also known as Plantagenêt. |
Note | | Geoffroy is spelled in French here; in English he is "Geoffrey" (see details in web links below) and, as the first "Plantagenêt" was the originator of the 300-year-long dynasty of the Plantagenêt Kings of France & England
His son, Henry, arguably one of the most effective Kings ever to wear the English crown was the first king of the great Plantagenet dynasty
Geoffroy was named after his great-grandfather, Geoffroy II, Count of Gâtinais and was also called "the Handsome" or "the Fair", each of which would be "Geoffroy le Bel" 'en Francais'
He was the Count of Anjou, Touraine, and Maine, in France (by inheritance) from 1129; he then became Duke of Normandy (by conquest) from 1144
By his marriage to Empress Matilda, daughter and heiress of Henry I of England, Geoffroy had a son, Henry Curtmantle, who succeeded to the English throne; Geoffroy founded the Plantagenêt dynasty, giving his nickname "Plantagenêt" to the dynasty; the spelling is the French version and is used throughout Don's tree
His nickname (and his surname) "Plantagenêt" was derived around 1130 from his use of sprigs of "yellow broom blossom" that he wore in his hat; the name is from "genêt"-the French name for "planta genista"-Latin for the broom shrub

Note | | Phil Daniels shared this data in Aug'14:
"research found that [Archie] retired from the Coast Guard / RN in 1905. I knew that he died in 1907, but could not understand why or how he passed away in Southampton, the death cert explains why
Sadly this death left his young wife Sarah with three young children Eliza (who was a midget), Basel (my Grandfather) and Hilda. They all traveled back to Weymouth where Eliza and her Mother were able to gain work; alas Basel and Hilda were surplus, so to speak
So, very sadly, Basel was put into the Seamanship Orphanage in Brixham Devon, and poor little Hilda was placed in the Exmouth mental asylum for feeble learning difficulties
Times must have been really hard early 1900's. Trying to find out more re Seaman's orphanage and Exmouth orphanage as they both respectively are listed there in 1911 census." |
