Katherine Swynford (book cover) [in Research]

Died as the Duchess of Lancaster |
| Name | | Katherine de Roet was also known as Katharine Catherine. |
| Note | | A Ms. Alison Weir recounts one of the greatest and most remarkable love stories of medieval England in her 2007 book, "Katherine Swynford, the story of John of Gaunt and his Scandalous Duchess" (see web link)
She quotes:
"It is the extraordinary tale of an exceptional woman, Katherine Swynford, who became the mistress (and later the wife) of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. Her charismatic lover was one of the most powerful princes of the fourteenth century their relationship was passionate, and ultimately poignant
Katherine was renowned for her beauty; she was enigmatic and intriguing; and some of her contemporaries regarded her as dangerous. Her colourful existence was played out against a vivid backdrop of court life at the height of the age of chivalry, and she knew most of the great figures of the time-among them, her brother-in-law, the poet Geoffrey Chaucer. She lived through the Hundred Years War, the Black Death and the Peasants' Revolt, she knew loss, adversity and heartbreak, and she survived them all triumphantly
Although Katherine's story provides unique insights into the life of a medieval woman, she was far from typical in that chauvinistic age. She was an important person in her own right, a woman who had remarkable opportunities, made her own choices, flouted convention and took control of her own destiny-even of her own public image
She was clearly intelligent, with immense ability, and fortunate enough to move in circles where these qualities were valued and encouraged in women. Although she was to suffer a moral backlash, she coped brilliantly with the sweeping, and sometimes devastating, changes of fortune that befell her
Above all, perhaps, Katherine must be retrieved from the footnotes-and set to live and breathe again-because of her key dynastic position within the English monarchy. She was the mother of the Beaufort's, and through them the ancestress of the Yorkist Kings, the Tudor's, the Stuart's and every other sovereign since-a prodigious legacy which has shaped the history of Britain." |

| Name | | Sarah Eldredge was also known as Leithfield, See Primary Note. |
| Note | | [source FamilySearch note]
Regarding the identity of Sarah (Eldredge) Bentley's parents-those who propose Leithfield or Litchfield as her maiden name seem to use the book "Persecutions of the Baptists by the Boston Church" as their reference. What this book might contain to support their contention is unknown to us
However, the dates they give and the insistence on the three Williams as Grandfather, Father and Son theory, which is unsupportable, lead us to believe there is nothing in this book to prove Sarah's parentage
Those who believe she was an Eldred [as Eldredge in Don's tree] point to the testimony given by Sarah in 1718 concerning Samuel Eldred dwelling on the land where his son John then lived fifty years ago (ie. about 1668). She even mentioned that the old road ran on the east side of the house (a fact supported by the testimony of Henry Knowles). It would appear that she was living in Rhode Island in or before 1668
Since there is no known evidence to connect her to the family of Samuel Eldred (and apparently her testimony did not contain any language indicating a family connection with Samuel and John) some searchers have decided she is the daughter of William and Anne (Lumpkin) Eldred of Yarmouth, Massachusetts
She is said to be their 3rd (or 4th) child, born about 1650. At least one family researcher, Miss Eva Boone, had received from another family historian, a reference number for a marriage between Sarah and William Bentley. However, they had no marriage date and our inquiries to Yarmouth regarding this reference number produced no record. In addition, no connection between William Eldred of Yarmouth and Samuel Eldred of Kingstown has ever been proven-at least not as far as we are aware. We can reasonably assume that Sarah was in Rhode Island as early as 1668 but what her family connections were remain a mystery
There is a Sarah Eldred Liethfield with 2 sons by her first husband: James and Thomas of No. Kingstown 21 Dec 1696. |
