Note | | [ from an HTML file ] William Bigg Barclay was born on 26th December 1825 in St. Leonards, Shoreditch, Middlesex, the third son of Charles and Mary Barclay. He assisted his father in his grocery shop when young, and then at the age of 24 he met and fell in love with Rosalinda Latham, and they got married on 7th October 1849 in Rosalinda's home town of Birmingham, Warwickshire. Whilst living in Birmingham, William found work as a Japanner and they went on to have two children, but unfortunately after giving birth to their second child Jessy Jane Barclay in 1852, Rosalinda died
William, now a widower with a 2 year child and a new born baby could not go to work and also look after his children, so he moved to Portsmouth where he lived with his parents, who helped him with the children. It was a year later that William married again on 14th April 1853 to Elizabeth Jane Stigant. It was around this time, or a few years later, that William began following in his father's footsteps and became a photographer
William, his new wife, and their two children moved to Plymouth, Devon, where he opened up his own photographic studio and a few years later went into partnership with another photographer David Groom. They both had their own studios, William's being at 88 Union Street, Plymouth, Devon and David's was at 45 High Street, Exeter. The partnership lasted until 1858 when they both decided to go their own ways and an announcement was made in the 15th June 1858 edition of The London Gazette. It announced that the partnership was to be dissolved by mutual consent and that William would carry on the business in Plymouth. Also in that year Leopold David Barclay was born to William & Elizabeth
Between 1858 and 1859 William and his family sailed to South Africa. The reason could have been because he saw his father traveling around England as a photographer and also his brother George and he decided to try abroad. Or the reason might be because his wife Elizabeth influenced him, because her cousin, Philip Stigant (b:1802-1871) emigrated to Cape Town, South Africa around 1822 and it was there that Philip's son, Philip John Stigant (1830-1891) eventually became Mayor of Cape Town, three times, in 1871, 1874 & finally in 1884
It appears that William Bigg Barclay did not start up immediately in his own Studio but was, for a short time, in partnership with another photographer, Joseph Kirkman in South Africa in 1859, when Joseph opened a studio in Greenmarket Street, Cape Town. He then had a Portrait Studio on the Corner of Burg and Castle Street, Cape Town 1861-62 and then at 8 Hout Street, Cape Town in 1863
Joseph Kirkman was a commercial photographer active in South Africa. In 1859 he opened a studio in Greenmarket Street, Cape Town. For a time he was in partnership with William Bigg Barclay. In 1860 Kirkman and Frederick York were employed by the Government and the Harbour Board to photograph the tilting of the first truck of stone off the Breakwater by Prince Alfred. In July to September 1860 Prince Alfred paid an official visit to South Africa while serving as a midshipman on board HMS Euryalus. His tour took him through the Cape Colony, Eastern Cape, Natal and the Orange Free State. From Port Elizabeth he proceeded by land in a strenuous trip of five weeks by mule wagon and on horse-back which formed the so-called 'White Train'. The Prince, who had learnt the rudiments of photography before the visit, took with him a double stereoscopic box camera and other photographic materials and equipment. These photographs are probably some of the earliest surviving pictures by the Prince, and they are preserved in an album of his work, dating from 1860 to April 1865. His photographs can be seen on "The Royal Collection" website giving a fascinating look at life in the 1860's in South Africa
http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/egallery/object.asp?searchText=prince+alfred&x=12&y=9&pagesize=20&object=2917614&row=0
In 1866 Joseph Kirkman disposed of his studio negatives to Lawrence and Selkirk. He set up a studio in George Town in 1867, but in December 1868 he returned to Cape Town with a studio at 2 Adderley Street. Kirkman's attempt to re-establish himself but he was not successful. Joseph retired from professional photography in 1870 and left for New Zealand in 1879
William & Elizabeth lived in Cape Town and had a baby girl in 1862-Annie Louise Barclay who was to be their last child together. They sailed back to England sometime afterwards, and lived in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Whether their marriage was on the rocks or William and Elizabeth drifted apart I don't know, but around 1870, William at the age of 45, met 19 year old Louisa Jane Camp and had an affair, which resulted in Louisa falling pregnant. In 1871 they lived as man and wife at 2 Brownlow Place, East Stonehouse, in Devon with their 3 month old baby
Elizabeth in the meantime was presumed to be living with her parents in Portsmouth because in 1871 both of her children, Leopold David Barclay and Annie Louise Barclay were living at 4 Regent Place, Portsmouth, with William and Ann Stigant. Elizabeth stayed in Portsmouth running a Boarding House at 7 Wilton Terrace, Portsea until the late 1890's. By 1911, at the age of 76, Elizabeth was living in Farnleigh, Curdridge, Botley, Hampshire with her married daughter Annie Louise Rice, helping her run Annie's private Boarding House. Elizabeth died in 1917 in Droxford, Hampshire at the grand old age of 83
Louisa Jane Camp went on to have another two children by William Bigg Barclay in Devon before they decided to move to London in 1876. When on the 11th January 1877 their 4th child was born, Ada Maria Barclay, William & Louisa got 3 of their children baptised on the same day on 22nd May 1877 in All Saints Church, Poplar, Middlesex. But when William & Louisa got married one month later, they got married in St. James the Great Church, in Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets
William still worked as a photographer and moved to Essex with his new bride and children and went on to have another 8 children, the last was when William was 69 years old, his wife gave birth to Grace Naomi Barclay on 9th July 1894. It was only another 6 years before William Bigg Barclay passed away on 23rd July 1900 in Leytonstone, West Ham, Essex. Louisa carried on living at 41 Vincent Street, Canning Town, West Ham, with her children. Around 1908 she met a young Royal Navy Scottish sailor Michael Charles Crawley (11 years younger than Louisa) and married him in the Register Office, West Ham, Essex on 6th November 1909. But their marriage only lasted 9 years when Michael died in 1918. Louisa died as a widow in 1940 in Romford, Essex, England. |
