"This one is still in progress, and [he is] not the primary researcher on it. Suffice it to say that we are relatively certain that Esther's father was a Matthew Robinson and that her mother was a Liddell. There are a ton of Matthew Robinson's however, and we are still working to get them all sorted out. And there are many Robinson families in the area that we think are connected as cousins back in SC. Here is the best bet for Esther's father, based primarily on a Revolutionary War pension application from the 1830s" ============================================================================================ Matthew Robinson was born about 1760 in Augusta County, Virginia. Between 1765 and 1770, he lived in Abbeville, South Carolina, also called Granville, SC, also called Old 96th District. In Matthew's pension application, he indicated that he enlisted in 1777 from Abbeville District and served for a total of five years under various commanders
In the 1790 SC census, his residence was Abbeville, South Carolina, with 4 males under age 16; 1 male over age 16; and 2 females
In the 1800 SC census, his residence was Abbeville, Abbeville, South Carolina with 4 males < 10; 2 males 10-15; 1 male 16-25; 1 male 26-44; 2 females < 10; 1 female 10-15; 1 female 26-44
In the 1810 SC census, his residence was Abbeville, Abbeville, South Carolina with 2 males < 10; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 16-25; 1 male 26-44; 1 male > 45; 2 females < 10; 1 female 16-25; 1 female > 45; and 1 slave; nearby were John Robertson and Matthew Robertson (sons?)
I haven't found Matthew in the 1820 census yet
In 1823, Matthew moved to Lawrence County, AL, where son James had already moved
Matthew appears on the 1828 Election Roll in Mount Hope, Lawrence, Alabama, along with James Robinson
In 1829, Matthew moved to Marion County, Alabama
In the 1830 AL census, shows up alone in Marion County, Alabama, male 70-80
In the 1840 AL census, shows up alone in Marion County, Alabama, male 80-90. This is the last AL census in which he appears
He has a number of unknown children, but here are the named ones that we have been able to identify:
Matthew M Robinson 1785-
James L Roberson 1786-1851
John Robinson 1790-1826
William R Robinson 1790-
Samuel Robinson 1800-
Esther Robinson 1800-1869 ========================================== Here is information about Matthew's wife from another research:
"Matthew was married to a daughter of James Liddle/Liddell. We know this because the will of James Liddell, which was dated 1791 and probated in 1796, named Matthew Robison as his son-in-law. In his will, James Liddle left one shilling each to his sons and daughters. However, instead of naming his daughters, he named his son-in-laws: Matthew Robison, James Martin and Daniel Keith, along with his sons Andrew Liddle, John Liddle and Moses Liddle. Because of this omission, we do not know the name of the daughter that was married to Matthew. The will further leaves a bequest of a cow to "James Robison" and to two other grandsons who were also named James. These three grandsons were the only grandchildren noted in the will, presumably because they were named after their grandfather. We know that Matthew had several more children because of the census records. On the 1825 Mills Atlas, the Liddles were noted to have been living along the Little River (remember, aka Long Cane Creek on the 1773 map), downstream from Robertson's Mill and Duett's Corner." |
