August Krubsack was born November 15, 1855, in the town of Lebanon, Dodge County, Wisconsin. His childhood days were spent at home with his parents. He attended a Lutheran parochial school and was confirmed
At the age of fifteen, he often was hired by neighboring farmers to cut hay with a scythe, and grain with a cradle for twenty-five cents a day. At the age of seventeen he left home to work for his brother, Ludwig who had bought a farm four miles north of Clintonville. In the winter he went north to Post Lake to help cut logs and drive oxen
One year he stayed in the woods all summer to tend the lumber company's oxen; this he enjoyed immensely, for he was a nature-lover and very fond of relating his summer experiences in Wisconsin's northern wilderness. Once when looking for the oxen quite late at night, a lynx, directly overhead, gave a hair-raising cry; he never forgot that scare. He spoke also of having seen deer pursued by wolves, and how he captured a bear cub after shooting its mother, though he tamed the cub, and later when he wanted to take it back home to Lebanon by train he was obliged to sell it at Oshkosh for two dollars
Later he toted food supplies from Embarrass to the lumber camps at Post Lake and at Pickerel Lake. This took him up the Military Road through the Indian Reservation, where he made many friends with the Indians-among whom were John Corn and Mag Law
On May 14, 1883, he was married to Theresa Bandow. He stayed for awhile at her father's farm in Dodge County. In 1885 he moved with his family to Embarrass, where he worked for Decker and Smith as a scaler and as chief sawyer
He built a home and a store in Embarrass, but in 1900 he sold both and moved two miles east to an uncleaned farm in the Town of Matteson. There he built another home, and in 1904 his brother Wilhelm built a barn for him. Here be reared six children. Of the nine born to him, three died in infancy. He lived all his life on the farm with the exception of a few years when he rented his farm and again moved to Embarrass. Returning to the farm, he built a new house, the old one having been destroyed by fire in 1934. Here he celebrated his golden wedding anniversary. Three years later, on March 17, 1936, he died. The Rev. Walter List officiated at the burial in the Embarrass Lutheran church and cemetery. |
