I knew that he died in 1907, but could not understand why or how he passed away in Southampton / the death cert explains why
Sadly this death left his young wife Sarah with three young children, Eliza (who was a midget), Basel (Phil's Grandfather) and Hilda
They all traveled back to Weymouth [after his death] where Eliza and her Mother were able to gain work; alas Basel and Hilda were surplus, so to speak…
So, very sadly, Basel was put into the Seamanship Orphanage in Brixham Devon, and poor little Hilda was placed in the Exmouth mental asylum for feeble learning difficulties
