Hugh Capet (King of France) [in Ancient People & Artifacts]
Biography
Birth | 24 August 940 | Hugh Capet, II, was born on 24 August 940 in Paris, Île-de-France, France (Medieval), EuropeG. Location also shown as "Isle of Aube, Champagne-Ardenne, France" / NFIA1,2 |

Died as King of France |
Burial | after 24 October 996 | He was buried after 24 October 996 at Buried in an unknown cemeteryG in Seine-Saint-Denis, Île-de-France, France (Medieval), EuropeG. |
Note | | Hugh Capet, born about 939, was the son of Hugh the Great and his wife Hedwige of Saxony. Hugh was descended from Charlemagne's sons Louis the Pious and Pepin of Italy through his mother and paternal grandmother, respectively, and was also a nephew of Otto the Great
In 969 Hugh married Adé laï de of Aquitaine, daughter of William III of Aquitaine and his wife Adele of Normandy, who was daughter of Rollo of Normandy and sister of William Longsword. This marriage was certainly politically motivated, aligning two of the most powerful families in Francia and may have been intended to cement peace between the families
Together Hugh and Adelaide became the progenitors of the Capetian dynasty of France, and had at least three children:
1. Hedwig, Countess of Mons (Hadevide, Avoise) (c. 969–after 1013), wife of Reginar IV, Count of Mons 2. Robert II (972–1031), the future king of France 3. Gisè le, Countess of Ponthieu (c. 970–1002), wife of Hugh I, Count of Ponthieu
A number of other daughters are less reliably attested
King Louis V died in 987 without heirs. The archbishop of Reims and the greatest lords of France elected Hugh Capet the new King of the Franks, choosing him over his cousin Charles, Duke of Lorraine. Hugh was crowned rex Francorum at Noyon in Picardy on 3 July 987, by the prelate of Reims, becoming the first of the Royal House of Capetian
Charles of Lorraine, the Carolingian heir, naturally contested the succession, followed by a time of siege and war which ended with Charles' imprisonment and death in 993
Almost immediately after his own coronation as king, Hugh pushed to have his son Robert made co-ruler and on December 30, 987 Robert was crowned. This forestalled any problems of succession later on
Hugh Capet died in Paris on October 14, 996, and was interred in the Saint Denis Basilica. His son Robert, already co-ruler, continued on as King
The coronation of Hugh Capet is considered the beginning of modern France. As Count of Paris, he made the city his power center and from there consolidated the rest of the country under his authority
The founder of the Capetian dynasty, Hugh's descendants ruled France from 987 to 1328; thereafter, the Kingdom was ruled by cadet branches of the dynasty. All French kings through Louis Philippe, and all royals since then, have belonged to the dynasty. Furthermore, cadet branches of the House continue to reign in Spain and Luxembourg
All monarchs of the Kingdom of France from Hugh Capet to Philip II of France were titled 'King of the Franks'. Philip II was the first to use the title 'King of France'. -----------
"Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “HUGUES OF FRANCE nicknamed le Grand or Capet, Duke of France, 960-987, King of France, 987-996, son of Hugues “le Grand,” Duke of France, by his 3rd wife, Hedwig, daughter of Heinrich I, King of Germany, born say 940. He married in the summer of 968 ADELAIDE OF POITOU, daughter of Guillaume I, Count of Poitou, Duke of Aquitaine, by Adè le, daughter of Rollo of Normandy. They had one son, Robert II [King of France], and two daughters, Hawise (or Hawidis/Hadwidis/Hathuidis/Hadevidam) (wife of Regnier IV, Count of Hainault) and Gisè le (wife of Hugues I, seigneur of Abbeville, Avoué of Saint-Riquier). He was consecrated King of France at Noyon 1 July 987. HUGUES CAPET, King of France, died at "Les Juifs" near Prasville, Eure-et-Loire 24 October 996, and was buried in the church of the Abbey of Saint-Denis. His widow, Adé laide, died 15 June 1003-5. Name | | William Taillefer, I (of Provence), was also known as Guillaume I, I (of Provence.) |
Name | | He was also known as William, the Liberator of Arles. |
Note | | William I "the Liberator" was Count of Provence from 968 until his abdication in 975 or 979, where he took the title of marchio or margrave; history shares that he was the founder of the County of Provence
He and his elder brother Rotbold I were sons of Boso II of Arles and his wife Constance, who, based on her name, has been speculated to be daughter of Charles Constantine of Vienne. Both brothers carried the title Count concurrently ("Comes" in French), but it is unknown if they were joint-counts of the whole of Provence or if the region was divided. His brother never bore any other title than count so long as William lived, so the latter seems to have attained a certain supremacy
In 980, William was installed as Count of Arles. His sobriquet comes from his victories against the Saracens by which he liberated Provence from their threat, which had been constant since the establishment of a base at Fraxinet. At the Battle of Tourtour in 973, with the assistance of the counts of the High Alps and the viscounts of Marseilles and Fos, he definitively routed the Saracens, chasing them forever from Provence
He then reorganized the region east of the Rhône, which he conquered from the Saracens and which had been given him as a gift from King Conrad of Burgundy. Also by royal consent, he and his descendants controlled the "fisc" (taxes) in Provence. With Isarn, Bishop of Grenoble, he repopulated Dauphiné and settled an Italian count named Ugo Blavia near Fréjus in 970 in order to bring that land back to cultivation. For all this, he figures prominently in Ralph Glaber's chronicle with the title of dux and he appears in a charter of 992 as pater patriae
He donated land to Cluny and retired to become a monk, dying at Avignon, where he was buried in the church of Saint-Croix at Sarrians
He was succeeded as margrave by his brother
His great principality began to diminish soon after his death as the castles of his vassals, which he had kept carefully under ducal control, soon became allods of their possessors
He may also have been the brother of Eremburge De Pont Audemer (born De Bricquebec Bertrand) who married Torf De Pont Audemer. Eremburge and Torf are the 18th great grandparents of Thomas Newberry the immigrant ancestor of the American family
