Charles Barclay was born on 4th August 1798 in London, the first son of John & Ann Barclay

He grew up and was gainfully employed as a grocer when he was around 22 years old

He met and fell in love with Mary Ann Bigg, and married her on 3rd January 1821 in Christ Church, Newgate Street, in the City of London

They went on to have 6 sons and two daughters whilst Charles was a grocer, but in 1841 he was working as a Baker in Drury Lane, Westminster, London

In 1849 he worked as a machinist in the printing trade, as was his eldest son Charles, and this is probably where his interest in photography began

At the time of the 1851 census, Charles Barclay, his wife and their 17 year old daughter, Mary Ann Barclay, moved from London down to Portsmouth, Hampshire at 40 King Street, Portsea. For the time being Charles made Portsmouth his permanent home while he toured England as a traveling photographer, visiting Birmingham, Derby and Shrewsbury

In the summer of 1853, Charles had a temporary photographic portrait studio at 2 St. James Street, Winchester, Hampshire. He left Winchester in October 1853 and by the following February he was taking photographic portraits in Newbury, Berkshire

On 14th February 1855, he announced on the front page of the Essex Standard that he was ready to take portraits at 150 High Street, Colchester in Essex

Sadly, a few years later his wife died in Portsmouth at the age of 59 on 10th December 1857

Around the time of his daughter's marriage in 1860, Charles Barclay set himself up as a photographer in Chichester, Sussex where he remained for the next six years. By this time, two of his sons, William and George followed in their fathers footsteps and became photographers themselves. Around 1863/4 Charles met and fell in love with a widow Jane Ann Every (nee Penny) and they got married in 1865 in Chichester where Charles had an established a permanent photographic studio in South Street, Chichester where he operated from, until 1867

Around 1868, Charles & Jane moved back to Portsmouth, and ran a grocer's shop at 86 Fratton Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire

On the 16 August 1874 Charles died at the age of 76. His wife Jane tried to carry on in the shop but she left the Grocery Shop and lived at 37 Harley Street, Portsea, Portsmouth working as a monthly Nurse for the Humphrey's family. Jane died 6 years later in 1887 at the age of 79.
