Sadly this death left his young wife Sarah with three young children Eliza (who was a midget), Basel (my Grandfather) and Hilda. They all traveled back to Weymouth where Eliza and her Mother were able to gain work; alas Basel and Hilda were surplus, so to speak
So, very sadly, Basel was put into the Seamanship Orphanage in Brixham Devon, and poor little Hilda was placed in the Exmouth mental asylum for feeble learning difficulties
Times must have been really hard early 1900's. Trying to find out more re Seaman's orphanage and Exmouth orphanage as they both respectively are listed there in 1911 census." |

Georgie told Don in our Aug'04 visit that she has "an American cousin from Rochester, New York visiting me here in Weymouth in September for a few days, and although I have known of her existence for some years, this is the first time we will have met. Her ancestor (Frederick Anthony), and my grandmother (Elizabeth White Anthony of Portland, who married Alfred George Jolliffe) were brother and sister"
It is not known exactly when Frederick emigrated to either the United states or Canada; a newspaper cutting suggests that he in fact returned to England, only to go back out there again
His first child was born in Ohio, US, in 1891 and the second, third and fourth in Canada in 1893. The remaining children were born in Westfield, New York, where Frederick lived until his death
It has also been suggested that a brother accompanied Frederick, but he could not settle and returned to England (maybe this is why Frederick also returned for a while). It is possible that the brother was William, as according to the records of Dorchester Jail, Dorset, he seems to have had no offences recorded between 1887-1895 which seems unlikely considering the rest of the time he was hardly ever out of jail
