Name | | Esther Ann Starkins was also known as Ethel, Her Every-Day Name. |
Note | | Edie incorrectly named her Grandmother as "Esther Starkings" in her book; subsequent research (DJS) corrected the error
Esther (Ethel) has numerous references throughout the book
Edie notes in her book that Esther had a son before her marriage to George "Whilst working at the age of (perhaps) 17 as the chamber-maid at a house called The Gables, she met a visitor, Harry. He then, 'with his fine talk and false promises, made secretly in his bedroom' made her pregnant; this caused her to lose her job"
Their son was never acknowledged by Harry. He was looked after by Esther's parents; he "grew up thinking that his mother was his elder sister"
When the boy was about 16 years old, Esther and George had married and moved to London with their young family (where they had become impoverished) and Esther finds out that Harry now owns a London drapery store (from a newspaper wrapping) and visits him, demanding and receiving recompense for his abandonment in the form of much-needed garments
From a note under her husband, George, "Esther was later known as 'Ethel' at the bookies." |
