See more details in William's Arrival note They were buried at that time on Cole's Hill, which became Burial Hill. Note | When William Bradford III was born in March, 1590 at Austerfield, York on the Northern border of England, his father, William, was 23 and his mother, Alice, was 27. He was baptised 19 Mar 1590 He became a dissenter from the church of England, and in 1607, when only eighteen years of age (in company with others) made an unsuccessful attempt to go to Leyden near Amsterdam, in Holland. Through the treachery of the master of the vessel, they were thrown into prison. Another attempt in 1608 was successful. He was active in preparing to come to America with Rev. John Robinson's church and was foremost in finding a proper place for a settlement of the new colony He was a Fustian maker (weaver) in 1611 He traveled on the Mayflower Pilgrim ship in 1620 and helped to establish the Plymouth Colony. On the death of Governor Carver, he was elected as the second Governor of the Plymouth Colony and remained so over thirty-three years between 1621 and 1632, 1634 and 1635 and 1637 and 1644 William Bradford's wife, Dorothy May, was drowned before she got ashore at Plymouth and he then married, Mrs. Alice Southworth (Carpenter), widow of Edward Southworth. They lived near William Bradford when he was in England. She was about thirty-three years old. She waived her right of a personal visit, which would call the governor away from duties of vast importance, to their new colony, in the wilderness" [The Janes Family, pages 114-115] He died at the age of 67 on May 9, 1657 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and was buried at the Plymouth Burial Hill in the Plymouth Colony A History of the Plymouth Plantation (incorrectly attached to Wm. Bradford Jr) "…owned at various times considerable tracts of land in Plymouth, among which may be mentioned a house and lot on the corner of Main Street and Town Square, and a house and lot near Stony Brook, in that part of Plymouth which was incorporated as Kingston, in 1726, in both of which he at various times made his home." and "William Bradford's wife died soon after their arrival; he married again and hath four children, three whereof are married." The manuscript of "History of Plymouth Plantation" is at the Massachusetts State Library and exhibited daily -Still-Of Plymouth Plantation: "About 100 persons reached Plymouth in the Mayflower in December 1620. Ten years later, after new arrivals by the Anne, the Fortune, the Little James and the Talbot, the total population was about 300. In 1650, when Governor Bradford stopped writing, there were less than a thousand people under his jurisdiction." Departure | 6 September 1620 | He departed for the US from at Mayflower ShipG+ in Southampton, Hampshire, England (Tudor), EuropeG, on or around on 6 September 1620. Note: the actual date is 16-Sep /the Pilgrims used a different calendar The departure from England was on the Pilgrim ship, Mayflower The Pilgrim ship Mayflower (a small ship, 100-feet long) embarked from London under Captain Christopher Jones (whose name was used to name a river) in the middle of July 1620 with 65 passengers and proceeded to Southampton to meet up with the Speedwell ship, which was bringing the Leyden contingent from Holland The two ships originally planned to begin their trans-Atlantic journey on August 5th, 1620 but problems with Speedwell caused the loss of a month of critical voyage time with the fall Atlantic gale season coming on. After two false starts and the failed full repairs to Speedwell's leaking hull, some of the passengers chose not to continue, returning to Holland on the Speedwell. The remaining passengers boarded the Mayflower, making a total of 102 passengers (including 3 pregnant women) as well as a crew of 30-40 making conditions extremely cramped…They finally departed Plymouth, Devon, England on September 6th, 1620. |
Arrival | 11 November 1620 | He arrived in the US at at Within the waters of the Cape Cod Bay, near ProvincetownG, in The Plymouth Colony (West of the Cape Cod Bay), British Colonial America (North America)G+, on or around on 11 November 1620 an actual Immigration event may not be present. The trip from England was on the Pilgrim ship, Mayflower "Anchored and the first explorations at Plymouth Colony" Wm Bradford had yet to assume any significant leadership role in the colony by the time that he was 30. The Mayflower anchored in Provincetown Harbor and he volunteered to be a member of the exploration parties searching for a place for settlement. In November and December, these parties made three separate ventures from the Mayflower on foot and by boat, finally locating Plymouth Harbor in mid-December and selecting that site for settlement During the first expedition on foot, Bradford got caught in a deer trap made by Indians and hauled nearly upside down. The third exploration departed from the Mayflower on December 6, 1620 when a group of men (including Bradford) located Plymouth Bay. A winter storm nearly sank their boat as they approached the bay, but they managed to land on Clark's Island, suffering from severe exposure to the cold and waves.[31] During the ensuing days, they explored the bay and found a suitable place for settlement, now the site of downtown Plymouth, Massachusetts. The location featured a prominent hill ideal for a defensive fort. There were numerous brooks providing fresh water, and it had been the location of an Indian village known as Patuxet; therefore, much of the area had already been cleared for planting crops. The Patuxet tribe had been wiped out by plagues between 1616 and 1619, possibly as a result of contact with English fishermen or from contact with the French to the north. Bradford wrote that bones of the dead were clearly evident in many places.12 |
Historical fact | 21 November 1620 | He The Mayflower Compact was written and signed shortly after the landing; see note; at Within the waters of the Cape Cod Bay (near Provincetown)G+ in Southampton, Hampshire, England (Tudor), EuropeG, on 21 November 1620. The Mayflower Compact The Compact was written and signed shortly after the Mayfair ship landed on November 11, 1620, where 41 adult male colonists, including two indentured servants, signed the Mayflower Compact: "In the name of God, Amen. "We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, defender of the Faith, etc.: "Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith, and the honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one another; covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. "In witness whereof we have hereunder subscribed our names at Cape Cod, the 11th of November, in the year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, Ireland the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth. Anno Domini 1620." These are the men who signed the agreement: John Carver [the First Governor of the Colony], William Bradford [the Second Governor of the Colony], Degory Priest, Edward Tilley, John Tilley, Thomas Williams, Edward Winslow, Francis Cooke, Gilbert Winslow, William Brewster, Thomas Rogers, Edmund Margesson, Isaac Allerton, Thomas Tinker, Peter Brown, Myles Standish, John Rigsdale, Richard Britteridge, John Alden, Edward Fuller, George Soule, Samuel Fuller, John Turner, Richard Clarke, Christopher Martin, Francis Eaton, Richard Gardinar, William Mullins, James Chilton, John Allerton, William White, John Crackstone, Thomas English, Richard Warren, John Billington, Edward Doty, John Howland, Moses Fletcher, Edward Leister, Stephen Hopkins and John Goodman [ it is supposed that those passengers who did not sign were either women or were not yet twenty-one years of age ] It's unclear who wrote the Mayflower Compact, but the well-educated Separatist and pastor William Brewster is usually given credit; it is not known as the "Mayflower Compact" until someone named it until after the American Revolution, more than a century and a half later The Pilgrim Colony leaders wanted to quell any rebellion before it took hold as establishing a New World colony would have been difficult enough without dissent in the ranks. They needed as many productive, law-abiding souls as possible to make the colony successful and with that in mind, they set out to create a temporary set of laws for ruling themselves as per majority agreement See the report here also https://www.history.com/topics/colonial-america/mayflower-compact |
