Historical fact19 December 1154He Upon his coronation. Henry changed his surname to Plantagenêt; on 19 December 1154. The House of Plantagenêt had its origins in a cadet branch of the original Counts of Anjou in France, the dynasty established by Fulk I of Anjou at the beginning of the tenth century, and ruled England for over three hundred years--they were a remarkable family, providing England with fourteen of its kings

The surname Plantagenêt, which was to become one of the most famous in England, seems to have derived from a nickname adopted by Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, the father of Henry II, and refers to his habit of wearing a sprig of broom or planta genista in his helmet

The dynasty produced such varied characters (see each in Don's tree), including:

1) the energetic Henry II, arguably one of England's greatest monarchs and his legendary son, Richard the Lionheart, who lead the Third Crusade against Saladin into the Holy Land,

2) the highly aesthetic Henry III and

3) his son, the indominatable Edward I, who conquered Wales and became known as the Hammer of the Scots for his campaigns into that country, where he fought William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, the most famous of Scotland's sons, and

4) Henry V, the conqueror of France, who bequeathed the diadems of both countries to his pious and ineffectual son, Henry VI

The latter Plantagenêts became divided into the Houses of Lancaster and York, which descended through different sons of King Edward III

The Plantagenêts., described by Bacon as "a race much dipped in their own blood" finally destroyed themselves in the bloody dynastic struggle we know of as the Wars of the Roses which were fought from 1455 until the final significant Battle of Bosworth Field on the 22nd of August 1485
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Bosworth_Field

The Yorkist king, Richard III became the last of the House of Plantagenêt when he was killed in the on Bosworth Field…the Plantagenêts were then displaced by the Tudors-the end of an era. All remaining males of the line became extinct with the execution in 1499 of Edward, Earl of Warwick, the son of George, Duke of Clarence, in the reign of Henry VII, the first Tudor
Titlebetween 19 December 1154 and 6 July 1189He held the title of King of England between 19 December 1154 and 6 July 1189 in England (Medieval), EuropeG+. 11th Count of Anjou, Count of Maine et Aquitane
Duke of Normandy and of Aquitaine
Count of Nantes
Lord of Ireland

He also controlled Wales, Scotland and Brittany at various times
