Wilfred Eric Ruddlesdin
M, #5529, Deceased, b. 30 December 1908, d. 6 March 2005

Biography
Birth | 30 December 1908 | Wilfred Eric Ruddlesdin was born on 30 December 1908 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG. |
Death | 6 March 2005 | He died The cause of his death (at the old-age of 97) on Sunday, March 6th, 2005 is not known on 6 March 2005 at age 96 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG. His death is not known & it occurred in today's England |
Cremation | after 6 March 2005 | He was cremated after 6 March 2005 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England (United Kingdom), EuropeG. |
Name | | Wilfred Eric Ruddlesdin was also known as Wilf, His Every-Day Name. |
Note | | Per Joyce, Wilf lived with his parents at Kettering, Radford (a village outside of Coventry) and at Wellingborough for most of his life, continuing to live at the family house after their death
Joyce wrote to me in March, 2005 to tell me that her Uncle Wilf had passed away and shared the following biographical note: "The family lived in Regent Street in Wellingborough around the 1920s-early 30s, and the children attended Park Street School; also the Methodist Church Sunday School, which was just below the School, and from then on Wilf always called himself a Methodist, although he had been christened at St Mary's Church in Kettering, along with his brother and sister"
He continued to remember so many hymns from those times, eighty-five or more years ago, and has without fail watched [on TV] Songs of Praise and listened to the Sunday Half-hour show, along with his hymn cassettes, right up until the present
It has to be said that his favorite phrase 'poor stuff' had been employed more frequently of late, on hearing some of the newer pop-style worship songs
After a short time at the Ideal Clothiers factory as a presser (where his sister Dorothy worked for some years as a hand button-holer), he went to work at Freddie Thompson's hairdressing/barbers shop in Silverstreet, where he stayed until joining the RAF for the duration of the second world war
He always maintained that he didn't want to join up as a hairdresser, so he asked to be trained on aircraft maintenance, then spending a good part of the war as a Leading Air Craftsman on a pilot training station in South Africa, thus seeing little of the action in Europe
At the end of the war he came smartly back to Wellingborough and took up residence again with his parents and brother Perce at the house where he has lived ever since
Having now acquired some mechanical training he got a job with the Direct Transport Company, working as one of the chief mechanics on their fleet of lorries, and when the company became part of British Road Services he continued to work for BRS until he retired, under company policy, aged 67, though he would have stayed on, given the opportunity
Wilf was always interested in light classical music, and particularly enjoyed Gilbert & Sullivan, to which he had been introduced when his boss Freddie Thompson (who was an important figure in the local amateur operatic society) asked him to help with make-up and wigs at a couple of G&S productions; and even in the last few months [of his life], when his dementia meant the loss of large chunks of memory, he could still recall and sing accurately almost all the lyrics from 'The Mikado' and was always delighted when periodically his LPs of the show were hunted out and played to him
Wilf was a keen motorcyclist from his teens, and had kept meticulous details of every motorbike which he had owned (even the ones he just used for spares). He was often to be seen competing in motorcycle scrambles and rallies, and for a record number of years he played a major part in the Wellingborough branch of the RAC/ACU [Auto-Cycle Union] Training Scheme for learner motorcyclists, where he proved to have a gift for teaching and organizing
He also joined the Wellingborough Motor Club, and was its secretary for a while, helping to organize club outings, rallies, and so on
He always treasured [and had kept] a letter which he received in 1937 in his early days as a member, from the Chairman of the Club, thanking him for his action on the occasion of a club outing in "riding back along the road in an effort to trace the member who had lost the party. It was a very fine gesture on your part and the Committee are proud of this example of true sportsmanship"
This willingness to help anyone in need was a hallmark of Wilf's character throughout his life, and neighbours and friends have often voiced their gratitude for his practical and kind assistance with all manner of problems
He gave up driving when he reached ninety (primarily, he declared, because it was too expensive to run a car just to potter around locally). But after 75 years of driving it was a hard decision for him to make
Right up to a few weeks ago [in March, 2005] he still loved being taken out for drives around the villages and would always jump at the chance of going out in the car
He never married, and remained in the family home, helping in the care of his parents, both of whom lived to an old age, and later his younger brother Perce
He has been a lifelong companion to his widowed sister Dorothy, now 98, and the best and most loving uncle his niece could ever have had." |
