| Note | [the author] thinks this was written maybe around 2008, when Craig Emerson (one of the primary researches of the Thomas Emmerson of Goochland line) and I were trying to work through how George Emerson fit into the Thomas Emmerson line. This was after we received the DNA study results -- Chronological Mentions of Thomas Emerson (Jr.) of Goochland Co., VA -- 1794 Thomas and Linny his wife, sold land to Hubbard Furlong, a son of John Furlong, a brother-in-law. (Hubbard Furlong sold this land in 1798 to Martin Thacker, and he gave his home as Abbeville County, South Carolina.) 1794 Thomas and Linny, his wife, of Goochland County, sold 243 acres of land in on the north side of the James River to John Williams 1796 Last mention of Thomas & James Emmerson on Goochland County Tax Lists (Thomas had appeared as Jr. at least by 1783 in addition to his father, Thomas)(James first appeared on the list in 1794- believed to have been a child of Thomas Jr.) 1800 Abbeville Co., SC Census-Thomas and James Emerson Thomas Emerson 1 male 45+ (b. before 1755) 1 male 16-26 1 male 0-10 1 female 45+ 1 female 26-45 2 female 16-26 2 female 10-16 James Emerson 1 male 16-26 (b. 1774-1784) 1 female 16-26 -- No other mentions of Thomas Emerson have been found in Abbeville Co., SC. This is the last AL census in which he appears He has a number of unknown children, but here are the named ones that we have been able to identify: Matthew M Robinson 1785- James L Roberson 1786-1851 John Robinson 1790-1826 William R Robinson 1790- Samuel Robinson 1800- Esther Robinson 1800-1869 ========================================== Here is information about Matthew's wife from another research: "Matthew was married to a daughter of James Liddle/Liddell. We know this because the will of James Liddell, which was dated 1791 and probated in 1796, named Matthew Robison as his son-in-law. In his will, James Liddle left one shilling each to his sons and daughters. However, instead of naming his daughters, he named his son-in-laws: Matthew Robison, James Martin and Daniel Keith, along with his sons Andrew Liddle, John Liddle and Moses Liddle. Because of this omission, we do not know the name of the daughter that was married to Matthew. The will further leaves a bequest of a cow to "James Robison" and to two other grandsons who were also named James. These three grandsons were the only grandchildren noted in the will, presumably because they were named after their grandfather. We know that Matthew had several more children because of the census records. On the 1825 Mills Atlas, the Liddles were noted to have been living along the Little River (remember, aka Long Cane Creek on the 1773 map), downstream from Robertson's Mill and Duett's Corner." | |
