Jeremiah and Mahala Langston Holland, emigrated to Lawrence County. Ala. Their descendants, many of them, live around Moulton. Lawrence County. Ala. A copy of a letter from Jeremiah and Mahala Holland to her parents. (2) Henry and Sarah Langston. dated 1837 follows:

Alabama, June 2nd. 1837

Laurence County,

Dear Father and Mother:

We embrace the present opportunity of writing to you to let you know that we are all on the land of the living yet, and enjoy reasonable health at present. Hoping these few lines may reach your hands and find you and your family enjoying the same blessing. We have nothing of importance to write to you. We have not heard from you for a great while it has been something like 12 months since we have heard from you. We want to hear from you very much. We have had a very cold dry spring. We had rain and snow on the 16th day of May and then it continued cool and dry until the 15th of June, then it commenced raining the most powerful torrents of water that ever has been seen in this Country and continues yet, so our crops of cotton is very small for this season of the year. Corn on high land is very flattering, but all low land is drowned. Wheat is extremely good this year

Our State, with our Sister States are in a bad fix in the money way. All of the Banks has stopped special payment and our comition merchants are broke and left the people to pay the Bank debts after getting all of their last years crop of cotton in their hands. Our Gouvernor has called session of our Legislature and they are now in session concerning the oppression of money, to make some arrangements for to relieve the people from under the present embarrassments, but it is not probable they can do much good to the common people. We don't know what they have done. The times is distressing here now for want of money, but Mississippi State is far worse off than we are. Tennessee State is equally in like fix with us. We don't know how you are a doing in the money, but we reasonably suppose that you have hard times in your State also

Eaday (a negro slave) is well and remembers her compliments to Addase and Silvery and wants to know if they are both alive yet, or not, and too. she wants to know who all of her brothers married. She is not married yet.nor got no children

We wish you to let all of our brothers and sisters see letter and we don't want them to think hard of us for not writing separately to you all, but we want you all to write us as often as opportunity is favorable, and let as know how you are a doing. Give our respects to all inquiring friends, and to all your children, and our children sends their respects to their Grandfather and Mother, and all of their Uncles and Aunts and Cousins in that County. So we add no more but subscribe ourselves your son and daughter, until death

Jeremiah Holland.
Mahalath Holland,

Father and mother Langston. (Henry and Sarah).
P. S.—Samuel Langston's eldest child is very sick with a bowel complaint. He has three children a living and one dead. He is a doing pretty much like his Father
