James and his son John, with help from (brother and Uncle) John "the gardener" founded Freehold in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and moved the county seat there amid some political turmoil in 1714
(TheShipsList-L Archives & Mel Reid, 2007)
1690, James Reid of Monmouth Co., deeded 60 acres granted him by patent March 29, 1689. His land in Freehold adjoined that of John Reid; and on May 9, 1690, John Reid of Monmouth Co., deeded a lot to his brother James of the same county. (N. J. Archives, 21:173, 189, 194)

In reference to the John Hampton article pictured here:
"Scottish Emigration to Colonial America, 1607 - 1785", by David Dobson:
p. 49 "Three vessels involved in transporting emigrants from Scotland to East New Jersey between 1683 and 1685 have been positively identified: the 'Exchange', the 'Thomas and Benjamin', and the 'Henry and Francis'. A fourth ship, the 'America', is a possibility. The advance party sailed from Leith on the 'Exchange of Stockton', under master James Peacock, on 10 August 1683, via Aberdeen under the leadership of David Barclay the younger of Urie and landed on Staten Island on 19 December 1683. The passengers include key personnel such as the joint overseers John Hampton and John Reid together with their servants and families. The Quakers Hampton & Reid were both gardeners by profession, the latter being the author and publisher of 'The Scotch Gardener'. The voyage and cargo were financed by some of the proprietors, including Arent Sonneman. Robert Gordon of Cluny, Gavin Lawrie, William Dockwra (a merchant in London), David Falconer, and David Barclay, at a cost of £973-5d-9s."
Additionally:
John Reid immigrated with John Hampton to America in 1683. He was born 2-13-1655, Mildrew Castle, Kirkliston. He was a Gardner and author of "The Scotch Gardner." He married Margaret Miller. He was joint overseer of the East Jersey settlement with John Hampton. He died 11-16-1723 in Monmouth Co, NJ. His son James, later surveyor general of NJ, sailed with him.
