Biography

Birth12 October 1595William Chandler, Sr., was born on 12 October 1595 in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England (Tudor), EuropeG. The following information is found in the Book "English Origins of New England Families; 1500's-1800's":

"William Chandler, of Bishops-Stortford, County Herts, and of Roxbury, Massachusetts, pointer, immigrant ancestor of the Chandler family in America…"

"William Chandler learned the trade of point making, the making of the lace tags for fastening clothing which were in vogue before buttons came into use. By his father's will, in 1618, he received only L4, and it is, therefore, probable that he had already received from his father a portion of his patrimony. Except for the references to him in the parish registers and in his father's will, no records of him have been found at Bishop's-Stortford, where he resided until he emigrated with hi family to New England in 1637. His emigration was due, without doubt, to the preaching of Rev. John Eliot the Puritan minister known as the 'Apostle to the Indians,' who was born in the neighboring parish of Widford in 1604, went to New England in 1631, and became pastor of the church at Roxbury, Mass., being accompanied or followed thither by many adherents who had lived in the parishes on the borders of Herts and Essex. William Chandler appears among the early proprietors and householders of Roxbury, and was admitted a freeman of Massachusetts on 13 May 1640. (Records of the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay, printed, vol. 1, p. 377.) He owned an estate of twenty-two acres, described as follows: 'John Dane his house and lott with swamp before the house, butting upon the way leading to the house of John Watson east, in all five accres and a halfe more or lesse, upon John Watson's swamp south upon the heires of Thomas Ruggles west, and upon the heirs of George Alcocke north. And in the nookes next Dorchester being the second lott lying betweene Phillip Tory and the assignes of Joseph Patching ten accres and a halfe. And in the thousand accres near Deddam. All the lands with the house above mentioned were latly belonging to the heires of William Chandler.' (Roxbury Land and Church Records, printed, pp. 5, 39) this homestead of William Chandler was situated at the southerly corner of the present Bartlett and Washington Streets in Roxbury (See Drake's Town of Roxbury, p. 368); and it later became the property of John Dane, who married the widow of William Chandler, by grant of the Massachusetts General Court, as appears from the following documents: '1649. At a Genrall Corte at Boston, the 17th of the 8th month. Upon the petition of John Dayne, the house & land which was William Chambers [sic] is settled upon ye said Dayne, he having paid more debts of Chambers [sic] then he house & land was worth, & also brought up ye children of Chandler, which have bene chargable to him' 19 Oct 1649. In answer to the peticon of John Dajne ffor the settling the howse and lands of William Chandler (whose wyddow he marryed, & children brought up) on him, the said John Dajne, his request was graunted, & ye said howse and lands confirmed on him by this Courte.' (Records of the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay, printed, vol. 2, p. 283, vol. 3,;. 177) The following account of William Chandler, given in the list of members of the Roxbury Church by his pastor, Rev. William Chandler and Annis his wife came from England in 1637 with their children and settled in Roxbury MA. The family seem to have been without any means of support, and during the long illness of Mr. Chandler they were cared for by their neighbors and friends, on account of their affection for him. He died in the year 1641, "having lived a very religious and godly life" and "leaving a sweet memory and savor behind him."! A Sketch Of The Chandler Family In Worcester. He died after a long illness of consumption. William, his wife and four children immigrated to New England in 1637 and settled at Roxbury, MA. He may have located at Roxbury because of the leadership of the Rev John Elliot, the Puritan minister known as the "Apostle to the Indians," who was followed to Roxbury by many adherents who had lived in the parishes on the borders of Herts and Essex. William was a "point maker" by trade in England. This consisted of making lace tags for fastening clothing which were popular before buttons were used. In Roxbury, he was among the early proprietors and householders. He was admitted a freeman of Massachusetts on 13 May 1640.! Norris, Hackett, Prescott and Allied Families by Hugh A Johnson pgs 78-81

1, p. 377.) He owned an estate of twenty-two acres, described as follows:
'John Dane his house and lott with swamp before the house, butting upon the way leading to the house of John Watson east, in all five accres and a halfe more or lesse, upon John Watson's swamp south upon the heires of Thomas Ruggles west, and upon the heirs of George Alcocke north. 5, 39)

This homestead of William Chandler was situated at the southerly corner of the present Bartlett and Washington Streets in Roxbury (See Drake's Town of Roxbury, p. 368); and it later became the property of John Dane, who married the widow of William Chandler, by grant of the Massachusetts General Court, as appears from the following documents:
'1649. At a Genrall Corte at Boston, the 17th of the 8th month. Upon the petition of John Dayne, the house & land which was William Chambers [sic] is settled upon ye said Dayne, he having paid more debts of Chambers [sic] then he house & land was worth, & also brought up ye children of Chandler, which have bene chargable to him'
