Note!MARRIAGE: Combers' SUSSEX GENEALOGIES (Lewes Centre); p.265 (of Laughton).! BURIAL: ibid! NOTE: [written by Ashton Emery] Edward's ancestry is not proven although seven generations of Shoosmiths were traced by John Comber and/or Edward Shoosmith (1880-1956) from 1387 when John Shosmyth of Wadhurst married Alice, daughter of John Horwe, through to 16 July, 1573 when Thomas Shoosmith of Ticehurst married Mary Wickens of Hailsham. Comber, author of Sussex Genealogies (published 1933), believed Thomas of Ticehurst to be Edward Shuesmithe's father. Examination of Shoosmith wills from 16th and 17th centuries, including Edward's, fails to prove Edward's ancestry. The will of Thomas Shusmith of Laughton was written in 1627, only a year before Edward died. Thomas, apparently a widower, mentions only one Shoosmith, a daughter, Elizabeth Shusmith, who was under 21 and who received the bulk of his estate. George Wenham and Thomas Willard were executors. It is possible that this Thomas Shusmith was a brother of Edward. Thomas Willard was also an overseer of Edward's will. An article about Laughton's church bells published in the Sussex County Herald of 3 January 1925 suggests that Thomas and Edward were the sons of John Showsmyth who was living at Waldron in 1592. If true, this contradicts the ancestry of Edward developed by John Comber/Edward Claver Shoosmith. A John Shosmyth married Joan Smyth in Framfield on 15 November 1586 but I do not know if this is the second marriage of the Waldron John or the wedding of a son thereof or that of a brother of Edward.!
