So my [Susan's] background is that my mother's (Dorothy Pearcey, 1931-2003) father, Edgar Ernest Jervis Pearcey (some name!) was the son of William Adolphus Pearcey (1879-1972) [who in turn appears to be the child of William Pearcey (1861-1904) and Anne Roper, below]

I knew him well […but] at this point I have to tell you that [William's] parentage has always been shrouded in doubt. My tree exhibits the records. He was born as a Roper, being named "William Adolphus Henry Roper" after his mother (Annie Elizabeth Sarah Neale Roper, 1859-1944ish, who was unmarried at that time) at his christening in Longbredy church; he is described by this record as illegitimate

[Annie] then marries William Pearcey (1861) almost immediately after the birth; the 1881 census has William Pearcey (1879) as "son" but we never knew if William Pearcey was his biological father.
