On one source of information on John Armstrong, his family and descendants is that they are the Wabash County, Illinois Lineages (Colonial Revolutionary Pioneer), compiled by Deward C. Williams, Mt. Carmel, Illinois, 1969
Some of the following was copied from excerpts from the Wabash County, Illinois Lineages, copied by Carol & Steve Unger, 13605 Dowlais Drive, Rockville, MD 20853, CIS: 73003,3723
All the information from these excerpts is included in the tree structure and notes of the John Armstrong Sr family in this GEDCOM file-Chester W. Seifers (I [author] have a copy of these excerpts)-1995
Another source is a book called "History & Families, Wabash County, Illinois 1824-1993". I received copies from this book from Michael H. Kaericter, 8171 Brookville Road, Plymouth, MI 48170. He found the book at a library called "The Newberry Library" in Chicago. The Newberry, is in north central Chicago, on Washington Park, just above the loop. It is one of the great historical and genealogical collections in the country, especially for mid-western families. It's well worth a visit if you are ever in Chicago, but do allow enough time to get familiar with its collections and to use them!
The following information came from the above two sources. Where there was a conflict between the two, the "History & Families, Wabash County, Illinois was used.-Chester W. Seifers 1995
The Armstrong family is of Scotch-Irish descent and can trace a one thousand year history back to a powerful border clan that lived in the debatable land between Scotland and England
The family has a coat-of-arms and a tartan
John Armstrong, the Wabash County pioneer ancestor is said to have been a soldier in the War of the Revolution, and is listed in Harriet Walker's book, "Revolutionary War Soldiers Buried in Illinois". By his own account, he fought in this War as a young man, being only age 17 at war's end
John and three of his sons, Abner, James M, and Ephraim enlisted in Tennessee for service in the War of 1812
The Armstrong family originally came from North Carolina, and later moved to Kentucky sometime between 1795 and 1799. From Kentucky, they moved to Smith's Fork (now Statesville), Wilson County, Tennessee about 1800
According to Wilson County Records, John Armstrong sold the 160 acres of land he owned in Tennessee on October 17, 1815. By late 1815 or early 1816, John Armstrong had moved to what is now Wabash County (Edwards County then), Illinois and settled in Section 13, Township 1 North, Range 12 West, in what is now Wabash precinct, on 200 acres of land purchased from Levi Compton. The land is located one mile southeast of the present town of Allendale, Illinois, and where the Armstrong Cemetery is today. Here he built a cabin which was to be his home until his death on April 30, 1836. John and his children were considered pioneers of the area. By 1824, a post office (named "Armstrong") had been established at this site and was first kept by his son, Abner Armstrong
At this time in the history of Wabash County, there were but three other post offices in the county: Mt Carmel, Centerville, and "Coffeeton" (the name and location of this post office was changed to Allendale about the year 1875?). The tri-county history (1883) states that John's father died at the Siege of Derry in Ireland. As with any family tradition, there are always some seeds of fact, but the Siege of Derry took place in 1689, and John was not born until seventy-five years later. This may be a family tradition that concerned a grandfather or great-grandfather. The Irish were fiercely proud of their heritage, and exact facts may have been lost by the time this tradition was printed in 1883. (The above taken from "History & Families, Wabash County, Illinois."
See the excerpt below, taken from Grolier's Encyclopedia-Chester W. Seifers 1995). "The town (Londonderry) grew around a monastery founded by Saint Columba in 546. Following an unsuccessful Irish revolt against the English in the early 1 7th century, James I gave (1613) the town as a land grant to the City of London; the original name, Derry (from the Gaelic doire, "oakwood"), then became Londonderry. In 1689 the city withstood a 105-day siege by the army of JAMES II; the event is commemorated every year."
John served on the first county commissioner's court of Edwards County (1819-1820) and on the first grand jury appointed in Wabash County in 1825
Both John Armstrong and his wife Elizabeth are buried in the now abandoned Fox Cemetery, Wabash precinct. The grave marker of his wife Elizabeth was found years ago by Mr. B.J. Walters in a ditch running east and west along the north side of the burial plot. The marker was removed by relatives to the Armstrong Cemetery near Allendale, Illinois, where members of the Armstrong family are buried. (The above taken from "Wabash County Lineages".) |
Arrival | before 1789 | John Armstrong arrived in the US at at Arrival in the Port of New York (prior to Ellis Island which opened in 1892)G+ in New York City, New York Metropolitan Area, State of New York, United States (North America)G+, on or around before 1789 an actual Immigration event may not be present. The Arrival fact was created from differing birth & death locations; date is from the marriage & location is presumed / NFIA |

He was active in the church throughout his life. "The Land of Wilkes" Chapter on the "Acts of County Justices: "The justices ordered that the Yadkin River be cleared out for the passage of boats up the Yadkin to the mouth of Buffalo Creek and persons living within five miles north or sough of the river were ordered to work thereon. Overseers appointed were: John Martin from the county line up to Isaac Martins fish trap; Isaac Martin from his fish trap up to the lower end of Benjamin N. Martin, Sr,. plantation; James Martin, from that plantation up to Meridy's ford[…][…][…]." This is an indication to me that the Benjamin Martin and Isaac martin may be connected in some way. Isaac Martin and his sons were in Halifax county and deed books show that they bought and sold land in the North East part of the county in the 1760's-1780's.
