St. Marys Church Portsmouth [in the Gravestone collection]
St. Mary's Church in Kingston, Portsmouth has it's history stretching back to the 11th century, but recent archaeological investigations have unearthed foundations beneath the church that almost certainly date from Saxon times
This picture depicts the church as it was around the 1850's, seven years after this particular building, designed by Thomas Ellis Owen, was first opened
Charles Dickens and Isambard Brunel were baptised in this church
There have been several different churches on this site, the present building replacing the one shown here in the 1880's
