Byrne The 'German' Church (pp. 412-413)
The name has changed, but the German lettering above the entrance identifies the red brick church on Madison Ave., at the foot of Carroll St. as the German Protestant Evangelical Church. Today the church is the United Church of Christ, the result of a 1957 merger of Congregational and Evangelical and Reformed groups
The German church was founded in 1874 to serve the immigrant population as the German Evangelical Society. (A German Catholic church also was started-today's St. John the Baptist. See Catholic Churches)
The German Protestants, under the Rev. Henrich Loesch, met in the old City Hall on East Market St., built a church on East Church St. between William St. and Madison Ave. in 1875, and erected the present church in 1899 under the pastorate of the Rev. Ernest Schmidt
Rev. Rudolf Vieweg served the longest period as pastor-32 years-and the church debt was paid during his tenure. Mr. Vieweg's pastorate that began in 1906 included the trying years of World War I when anti-German sentiment was so strong that he discontinued service in the German Language
In the 1930's the church was famous for its public suppers. The Rev. Paul P. Frohne succeeded Mr. Wieweg in 1948 and the Rev. Hilmer H. Grunswald followed Frohne
The present minister [at that time], the Rev. Fridolin Baltzer Tschudy ministers to a staunch membership scattered in an area 40 miles in diameter. The Agnes flood of 1972 damaged the church to the extent of more than $118,000 but through the determination of the Rev. Mr. Tschudy, congregation president George Barchet and the membership, the church has recovered
The Germans (pp. 515-516)
In 1783 (almost as early as the arrival of the first Irish settlers) came the German Col. Matthias Hollenback, who, as the first businessman in this valley, started a trading post at the junction of Newton Creek and the Chemung-river. Liberal groups began to arrive here after the attempted German revolution in 1848 and again after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Many of them settled on hill farms, the Bauers, Kaspers, Motchmans and Gardners being the very early settlers on Dutch Hill. Others gravitated to the Frog Hollow and Buttonwoods areas. In 1866 the German Catholics, previously attending St. Peter and Paul's formed a congregation of their own, the Church of St. John the Baptist on Dickinson St., with also a small school run by German-Speaking nuns. A cornerstone, now preserved by the monks at Mount Saviour Monastery, marks 1879 as the date of a Dutch Hill mission church. When the Dickinson St. church burned in 1889, the present church at Lake and East Second Sts. was begun. Names long associated with the parish are Rhode, Rutan, Ruhmel, Mueller, Miller, Simmerman, Popeck, Schiefen, Deister, Prechtl, Snyder, Kopf, Hofbauer and Scharf. |
