The place that I named "Region of Greater London" today holds the capital of the United Kingdom and is its largest city; it is used in this tree to consolidate it's many towns, villages and burroughs Standing at the head of a 50-mile estuary leading to the North Sea, London is across both sides of the River Thames in the south-east of England; it was a major settlement more than two millennia in the past -- Londinium was founded by the Romans The City of London is London's ancient core (an area of 1.12 square miles, colloquially known as the Square Mile) and it retains boundaries that closely follow its medieval limits; the City of Westminster (part of Inner London) also holds city status The present metropolitan county of Greater London constitutes nearly all of the historic county of Middlesex (which comprises the bulk of London north of the River Thames), parts of the historic counties of Kent, Essex, and Hertfordshire, and a large part of the historic county of Surrey The administrative structure of Greater London includes the City of London and 32 boroughs: Inner London boroughs (13) are: Camden, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets (loaded in Don's tree data as the Borough of Tower Hamlets), Wandsworth, and the City of Westminster Outer London boroughs (19) are: Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Bexley, Brent, Bromley, Croydon, Ealing, Enfield, Greenwich, Harrow, Havering, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Redbridge, Richmond upon Thames, Southwark, Sutton, and Waltham Forest Greater London was formally created by the London Government Act of 1963 which came into force on 1 April 1965, replacing the administrative counties of Middlesex and London, including the City of London, where the London County Council had limited powers, and absorbing parts of Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent and Surrey.
