The Colonial Colony of Virginia, British Colonial America (North America)

The Colony of Virginia in Colonial America was created from the Jamestown Colony, named in 1624 On Wednesday the 20th of December, 1606, the people who became known as “The Pilgrims” set sail from London, England (104 people, see ref 1a) on 3 ships: the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. After 18+ weeks (with a brief stop in the West Indies, March 28th) they dropped anchors (ref 1b, click 1607) on Sunday the 29th of April, 1607 at their 1st landing place (ref 1c), Cape Henry in the Chesapeake Bay (ref 1d); they erected a cross there (ref 1b, click 1607), claiming the land for King James They then traveled north up the James River, searching for and finally selecting the best location for their settlement—a marshy peninsula ~50 miles up river—easily defensible if the Spanish had attacked... it is today near Williamsburg in Virginia As the 1st permanent English settlement in North America, the Jamestown Colony (known initially as the “James Cittie,” named after the river) was created on Sunday, May 14, 1607 (ref 2) giving England its 1st foothold in the European competition for the New World, which had been dominated by the Spanish since the voyages of Christopher Columbus (ref 3) in the late 15th century Many of the people who settled in the New World came from Europe to escape religious persecution, arriving in Jamestown after 1607 and in 1620 as the founders of Plymouth, Massachusetts; the colonists flourished with some assistance from Native Americans; New World grains (such as corn) kept the colonists from starving while in Virginia where tobacco provided a valuable cash crop The first English plantations along the south shore of the James River (within the present-day county of the Isle of Wight) were established by Puritan colonists, beginning with that of Christopher Lawne in May 1618. Several members of the Bennett family also settled there, including Richard Bennett; he led the Puritans to the neighboring Nansemond Indian Nation in 1635 (about 30 miles to the south of the Jamestown Colony), and later was appointed as governor of the Virginia Colony References 1.
