Old Stoke Church (William Salt Library) by Thomas Peploe Wood [in one of several areas, pending assessment]

This is a sepia drawing from 1841 by Thomas Peploe Wood of the old church of St Peter ad Vincula (St Peter in Chains) in Stoke. The church was actually demolished in 1829, although ruined arches following the pattern of the original design were reconstructed on the original site (the graveyard) by Stoke Architect Charles Lynam in 1881. He found the original stones used as a lining for the Boothern Mill watercourse
My [her] 3xgt grandfather John Bailey was baptised in the old church on 3rd September 1797, as was his siter Mary a year later. His parents were Timothy Bailey and Alice Smith who were married here on 27 Jun 1796
