Parents
Biography
Birth | 1650 | James B. Reid was born in 1650 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland (Medieval), EuropeG. |
Death | 1711 | He died in 1711 at age ~61 in Colonial County of Monmouth, Colony of New Jersey, British Colonial America (North America)G. The cause of his death at age 61 is not known |
Note | | Brothers John "the gardener" and James Reid crossed to the US with their families on the Ship “Exchange" under Captain James Peacock, leaving Leith on Aug 10, 1683 for Aberdeen and departing Aberdeen on Aug 28, 1683, arriving at New Perth (Perth Amboy) in East Jersey (New Jersey) on December 19, 1683
John was married to Margaret Miller and traveled with her and their three daughters
James was married to Anna Mill and likely crossed with her and his sons John and Samuel
John was the author of the "Scots Gardener" and became Surveyor General for East Jersey
James and his son John, with help from (brother and Uncle) John "the gardener" founded Freehold in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and moved the county seat there amid some political turmoil in 1714. (TheShipsList-L Archives & Mel Reid, 2007)
1690, James Reid of Monmouth Co., deeded 60 acres granted him by patent March 29, 1689. His land in Freehold adjoined that of John Reid; and on May 9, 1690, John Reid of Monmouth Co., deeded a lot to his brother James of the same county. (N. J. Archives, 21:173, 189, 194.)
Administration of the estate of James Reid of Freehold, Monmouth Co., was granted to John Reid, October 22, 1711. (Ibid., 23:380.) James had at least two sons, John and Samuel. In 1717, John Reid of Freehold is called an inn-holder in a deed. (Salter, History of Monmouth Co., p. xlviii.)
His parents were John "the younger" Reid and Anna Thomsone of Scotland. [John Reid, gardener, married Anna Thomsone 11th Nov. 1651 (Edinburgh marriage records)].
His grandparents were John "the elder" Reid and Agnes Laurie. [John Reid, gardener, married Agnes Laurie 28th Feb. 1633 (Edinburgh marriage records)]. ("This Old Monmouth of Ours", by William S. Horner)
In reference to the John Hampton article pictured here:
"Scottish Emigration to Colonial America, 1607 - 1785", by David Dobson:
p. 49 "Three vessels involved in transporting emigrants from Scotland to East New Jersey between 1683 and 1685 have been positively identified: the 'Exchange', the 'Thomas and Benjamin', and the 'Henry and Francis'. A fourth ship, the 'America', is a possibility. The advance party sailed from Leith on the 'Exchange of Stockton', under master James Peacock, on 10 August 1683, via Aberdeen under the leadership of David Barclay the younger of Urie and landed on Staten Island on 19 December 1683. The passengers include key personnel such as the joint overseers John Hampton and John Reid together with their servants and families. The Quakers Hampton & Reid were both gardeners by profession, the latter being the author and publisher of 'The Scotch Gardener'. The voyage and cargo were financed by some of the proprietors, including Arent Sonneman. Robert Gordon of Cluny, Gavin Lawrie, William Dockwra (a merchant in London), David Falconer, and David Barclay, at a cost of £973-5d-9s."
Additionally:
John Reid immigrated with John Hampton to America in 1683. He was born 2-13-1655, Mildrew Castle, Kirkliston. He was a Gardner and author of "The Scotch Gardner." He married Margaret Miller. He was joint overseer of the East Jersey settlement with John Hampton. He died 11-16-1723 in Monmouth Co, NJ. His son James, later surveyor general of NJ, sailed with him.
