Biography

Birthabout 1360John Kerrich, I., was born about 1360 in Leiston, Suffolk County, England (Medieval), EuropeG.
Deathafter 1378He died after 1378 in Leiston, Suffolk County, England (Medieval), EuropeG. The cause of his death (as a teenager aged 18) in the year of 1378 is not known-surviving in 1378 as a teenager was difficult & it occurred in Medieval England (location not known; used birth place)
NameJohn Kerrich, I., was also known as Kerridge Kerrich Keriche Kerych.
NoteJohn Kerrich I is a presumed person (based on John Kerrich II) and is the primary source for the Kerrich branch; as of Aug-2020 there are no further ancestors in this tree branch

The surname of KERRICH was a locational name 'of Kerridge' which was an elevated locality in the parish of Prestbury, County Cheshire, Medieval England,

The small villages of Europe (or royal and noble households, even large religious dwellings and monasteries) gave rise to many family names, which reflected the occupation or profession of the original bearer of the name. Following the Crusades in Europe in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries a need was felt for additional names which was recognized by those of gentle birth, who realized that it added prestige and practical advantage to their status. At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments

With his helmet covering his face and armour encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers was the insignia painted on his shield and embroidered onto his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armour

The rise of surnames, according to the accepted theory, was due to the Norman Conquest of 1066 when Old English personal-names were rapidly superseded by the new Christian names introduced by the Normans. Of these, only a few were really popular and in the 12th century this scarcity of Christian names led to the increasing use of surnames to distinguish the numerous individuals of the same name. Some Normans had hereditary surnames before they came to England, but there is evidence that surnames would have developed in England even had there been no Norman Conquest

The development of the feudal system made it essential that the king should know exactly what service each person owed. Payments to and by the exchequer required that debtors and creditors should be particularized, and it became official that each individual acquired exact identification

Early records of the Kerrich name mention a "Kenricus" (without surname), listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, and a "Chenric" / "Clericus" were both recorded in County Suffolk in 1095. A John Kendrich appears in County Suffolk in 1327, and a Robert Kerysche of Yorkshire was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379

Later instances of the name include Thomas Kerridge (recorded in the year 1631 in County Cheshire) and John Kerrich (rector of Banham, County Norfolk in the year 1735)… A Daniel Kerridge and Rebecca Brightman were also married at St. George's Chapel, Mayfair, London in 1753.
